Hey all,
I thought the bird highlight of my Sanford Lagoons visit this morning
was going to be the 4 Least Terns who made a brief stop over the long
pond around 7:15am, but it turned out there was another surprise on
the way.
At 8:40am, I was watching/photographing a Spotted Sandpiper atop a
sand mound in the north section of the property when I noticed the
bird crouch and tilt his/her head to look skyward; I looked up too and
saw a large black-and-white raptor flying directly overhead; my
initial thought was Osprey, but the body shape was all wrong; I took
several photos as the bird flew over and past me; the bird was out of
view less than a minute later, heading NW.
A large kite with white head, belly, and underwing coverts; black
wings, tail, and back; noticeably forked tail.
I believe this is the 1st record for Swallow-tailed Kite in York County.
Thank you Spotted Sandpiper!
