While en route to the Flood Farm this afternoon, I spotted a number of diving ducks just off the ice north of the Lawrence Ave. bridge in Fairfield. From the bridge I observed 5 Common Mergansers, 5 Common Goldeneye, and 5 Barrow's Goldeneye (4 drake and 1 hen).
From there I continued on to the Flood Farm. Upon approaching the farm, I observed many hundreds of American Crows moving steadily out of the east. A number of birds had settled on and along the roadside. At the manure/tire piles I observed 18 Horned Lark with a single Lapland Longspur among them. A large number of Mallards (and a few Black Ducks) circled over the adjacent fields before settling. I spotted the Northern Pintail hen was among them, but did not see the drake. I did, however, spot a single leucitic Mallard among the flock!
Crows streamed overhead the entirety of my visit. Not bad for a impromptu Sunday trip!
