Happy New Year everyone!
This morning's (brief) walk around the West Meadow returned my lowest number of birds per amount of effort that I've had at Gilsland Farm. Obviously the snow and temperatures didn't help: -2°F created a thick fog over the river keeping waterfowl counts down.
A total of 7 species was made possible thanks to the birds visiting the store's feeders. Two drake Bufflehead flying up river helped diversify the bunch, but a 'good in January' Northern Flicker feeding on sumac in the West Meadow was the real highlight - anything with a little color goes a long way when it is that cold out.
Here is a complete checklist with a digiscoped photo of the flicker embedded: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S16180611
For those interested, next Thursday (9 January) I will be giving a presentation on using eBird at Gilsland Farm starting at 7pm. We'll start with the basics of signing up and submitting checklists, then look deeper into 'exploring' data, patch lists, setting up alerts, and anything you have questions on. More information is available at: http://maineaudubon.org/events/birding-in-a-digital-age-part-two/
Good birding,
