Re: [Maine-birds] Countable birds

We had a lone Song Sparrow competing with Goldfinches and Juncoes at the school bird feeders in Bangor.  Also the most puffed-out Mourning Dove I've ever seen.  A second Mourning Dove was trying to hide in a corner that was protected from the wind, not realizing that school was letting out and hordes of schoolchildren were about to exit.  I may have scared it, but it scared me, too, as it flew by my face.

Alert: my column in the Bangor Daily News tomorrow is already online at http://bangordailynews.com/2014/01/03/outdoors/the-easiest-rule-in-birding-if-its-dead-it-doesnt-count/. It contains a shout-out to frequent poster, Kristen Lindquist. And for those who have just started a new Year List, listing rules can be a fascinating discussion.

Meanwhile, my FOY of was the lone ground-feeding American Tree Sparrow that is grateful for whatever the hoard of goldfinches drops from the feeders above. It's cold, blowing hard, and all the finches are puffed up like pillows.
