[Maine-birds] Boreal Birding Big Five

Cheryl Ring (Augusta Birding Club) and I went boreal birding up the Telos Road today, west of Baxter State Park. Ever since I first reported the American Three-toed Woodpeckers on the Harvester Road last February, they’ve been getting lots of attention. The gate keepers at the Telos Checkpoint are amused and delighted that so many birders have been up to visit. Fortunately, the woodpeckers seem unperturbed. Using a camcorder on a tripod, I zoomed in from a respectful distance today and made a movie star out of the male, who alternately drummed and preened. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-D2-zBpZWfk.  A female Black-backed Woodpecker just down the road shared a guest starring role. By 2:30, we had managed the Boreal Big Five: Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, Spruce Grouse, and both toe-challenged woodpeckers. Six different American Kestrels were up in the woods. I don’t know how they are doing around Maine farms, but they’re still pretty numerous around clearcuts. We had a bunch of Olive-sided Flycatchers, one Yellow-bellied Flycatcher,  and one quick flyover of crossbills (or crossbill) which I deemed to be a Red. Before the thunderstorm moved in, we had witnessed every northern woodpecker except sapsucker.

So, for your mid-summer breeding bird amusement… what is the species?  For scale those are unripe blueberries in the foreground.  You can see there is still one unhatched egg in there too.

Harrison says for Black-billed Cuckoo:

"Nest: loosely built cup...rounded with many projecting twig ends.... lined with dried grass, leaves, flowering stems".  "Usually low."

"egg: light blue, blueish green..."

"Altricial.   Almost naked, skin black with sparse, coarse white hairs....  There is a complex pattern of white papillae inside the mouth.  Tongue with black edges at tip."

Plus Cuckoos are sneaky as you described.

Still owe you a twelve pack!

[Maine-birds] Great blue heron eating an eel-Eagle Lake MDI

This guy came out from behind a bush carrying an eel wrapped around it's bill. As the drama proceeded, the eel kept tight to the bill as the heron strutted back and forth. Finally, over dry ground, the heron gained victory and the eel straightened out long enough to be consumed.
I'm thinking that, right after capture, because eel's are very strong, the heron took the eel to dry land so as not to lose it's catch. From the time Deb and I saw it moving towards the water until the eel was subdued an eaten, perhaps fifteen minutes past. Great wildlife drama to witness. I wish I could show you the other 60 images.

Anyone feel sorry for the eel?

Cheers,
Dave

[Maine-birds] Am 3-toed Woodpecker - North Maine Woods

Both birds (M & F) seen and photo'd this morning on Harvester Road, off Telos Road, thanks to concise and clear reports from others for the past 2+ months. No drumming, no vocalizations this morning; they simply flew into view out of nowhere, and landed on a spruce stub. Fuzzy photo of them together. Male remained there, frozen in place for 12 minutes, after female flew a short distance and disappeared. Returned to truck to get scope for digi-scope shot, but they holed up for 45 minutes, without showing themselves.

Dipped completely on the Woodpeckers the afternoon before. My sense is that at this point, one needs to be very patient. They apparently go through long periods of inactivity, or concealment, or both.

Meanwhile, an interaction between 2 Blk Backed Woodpeckers was taking place 200 yards to the West.

Other birds there included a Sharpie, Gray Jays, silent WTSparrows, a Nashville Warbler w/ a complete rusty cap, fly-over WWCrossbills, and a singing OS Fly. Otherwise, pretty quiet in that area.

[Maine-birds] 2-3 White-Faced Ibis Scarborough Marsh 7/28

On the way back from the Pine Point co-op area last night, I stopped behind the Pelreco building and saw 2 or possibly 3 White-Faced Ibis around the back of the closest panne to the parking area amongst ~30 total Ibis. One bird was most certainly the bird Derek L. posted recently that looks much like the "bright faced" bird seen regularly in the spring with substantial fading around the face. The other bird or two did not appear to have any white around the face, but showed red around the face and red eyes. I photographed the "bright" one in the same frame as a dull bird that are certainly both WFIB's, but the possible 3rd bird I cannot confirm 100% as WFIB. I cannot rule out the possibility of hybrid with the 3rd due to the poor lighting amongst very dark clouds and the high amount of noise in the photos. There were also 2 fledgling Ibis amongst the group, which cannot safely be identified to either species at that age.

The numbers of shorebirds when I was at the co-op was very good. I never had an opportunity to get an accurate count on birds due to a Peregrine Falcon terrorizing the flats, but I am guessing that the numbers have grown in the last couple of days. 300 + terns (mostly Common) filled the skies alongside the many mixed flocks of flushing shorebirds.

Bird haahd,
Noah Gibb-Portland

[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: Eurasian Wigeon continues

Hi All,

Just a quick note to say the eclipse plumaged Eurasian Wigeon continues to be seen at Lake Josephine in Easton.  I got some documentation-quality (read really bad) photos of the bird again last night just before the deluge set in.

There were a bajillion molting Mallards and lots of hen Gadwall with juvies still in the pond, but most of the American Wigeon and Ring-necked Ducks seem to have moved up to Christina Reservoir in Fort Fairfield.  Northern Shovelers have done thier usual vanishing act for July.  Hope to see one again soon..

The still chick-less Ruddy Ducks and Redhead juvies continue to be seen in the pond just south of Lake Jo.

A Red-necked Grebe was seen last week at Christina too.

Good Birding

[Maine-birds] Eastern Road Trail. Scarborough Marsh, 7/27

Hi all,

A productive late morning along the Eastern Road Trail was highlighted by the following:

 - 1 WHITE-FACED IBIS (a little far to age, and it has begun to molt and fade - and photos are awful - but it was probably the "bright-faced" adult that has been present since spring).
- 3-4 adult STILT SANDPIPERS (photos), first of year.
- 1 CASPIAN TERN, fly-by, heading south down the trail and disappearing over Pine Point Road.
- 6 Pectoral Sandpipers (first of "fall").

[Maine-birds] Popham Beach, ETC.

About the usual this morning at Popham Beach, as far as diversity and numbers of shorebirds and terns go. But two nearby spots were more interesting.

At Spirit Pond (part of the Morse River, Popham Beach Seawall system) , the water level was reaching its lowest at ca 11 A.M. (as outside, the tide was reaching its High for the day...It's confusing). A large number of Snowy Egrets (38) were gathered around the pond, and on the briefly exposed sandbar there were 1,155 peeps, close to the number we left at Popham 15 minutes earlier. Most were Semi Sands, but also included were 72 SBDowitchers, 2 Ruddy Turnstones, 82 Yellowlegs (both), and only 2 Semi Plovers. I suspect these were new arrivals to the system, and the darkening cloud cover may have played a part in their sudden appearance.

From Green Point on Atkins Bay at 11:18, The darkening sky and an apparent large school of small clupeid fishes, attracted a large, compact bunch of DCCormorants, and ca 50 diving Com Terns, while on the shrinking sand sat another 227 Semi Sands, along with the long-visiting Whimbrel, 16 Bonies (adults), 57 RBGulls. The peeps flew off to loaf seriously on a nearby rock (instead of flying over to Popham for the High Tide as they usually do). They were joined there by 5 Snowy Egrets, also an odd sight.

Because of these two sights, I'd expect the total number of shorebirds at Popham/Seawall to increase substantially in the next few days.

[Maine-birds] Pectoral Sandpiper and a swarm of swallows at Addison

At mid-tide this morning we were at the Addison boat landing and noticed lots and lots of swallows in the air.  They were flying overhead at different heights and at one point several were perched on the power line that leads to the boat landing light.  The majority of swallows were Barn and Cliff, but also saw one Bank Swallow and a number of Rough-winged and Tree Swallows.  We saw all but the Bank Swallow on the power line.

Also, a flock of 80+ Semi-palmated Sandpipers were moving around accompanied by 26 Short-billed Dowitchers,  4 Greater Yellowlegs and one Lesser Yellowlegs.   And then - the best - one Pectoral Sandpiper that joined the yellowlegs on the mud across from the boat landing.  Perhaps this is the one that Bob Duchesne reported?????

Addison marshes continue to delight!

[Maine-birds] Popham Beach - Jul 25

The most striking feature of the environment at Popham early yesterday morning (6:40 to 9:00), was the clarity of the air. The cold front brought with it some cool, dry, invisible air. Scanning the offshore rocks was made much easier. Many visible Blk Guillemots, mostly basking in the sun, some wedged into the diagonal cracks on the rock faces. My first 3 Gray Seals of the season were spy-hopping just beyond the surf zone. A Spotted Sandpiper was flitting around the base of Three Herons I.

8 Black Scoters were 'spill-overs' from the 100s off Seawall Beach just now. Least Terns were behaving about as they have been for the past couple weeks. Lots of fish carrying, pairing up, food offering, etc. Could count 35 at one point. Most of the peeps were over in Atkins Bay on the exposed mudflats, but 450 Semi Sands were either on the intertidal sand or in the lagoon. Sanderlings and Semi Plovers are both increasing in numbers.

A Whimbrel was over at Green Point. Has been there for few weeks. 2 Killdeers fly-over - not common at Popham.

And still have yet to see the first White-rumped Sand here. Maybe the weather offshore has been too nice lately, allowing them to cruise straight down the GOM on their way to the West Indies.

[Maine-birds] Downeast

Seth Benz and I are having an interesting time with a 5-day tour Downeast.
Some oddities have popped up. Yesterday was the first time I've ever
encountered a puffin at Quoddy Head State Park. Today we had a female
bufflehead in the lagoon behind Roque Bluffs State Park. I don't recall
ever getting a July bufflehead. A pectoral sandpiper was in the distant
pannes off the Addison boat ramp. Later we had a black-billed cuckoo
behind the blueberry fields on Pea Ridge Road in Columbia.

But we missed upland sandpiper there today. We believe they should still
be around for a little while longer, but if anyone has records of their
usual departure time, please reply off list.

[Maine-birds] Essex Woods and Flat Bay

A short probe in Essex Woods this morning found 2 Blue-winged Teal among a multitude of Mallards and Black Ducks.  On the cattail side there were at least 4 Solitary Sandpipers and a pair of Least Sandpipers.  We heard a Wood Pewee calling from deep in the woods.

Back home on Flat Bay we saw 8 Whimbrel out on the mud flats in front of the house (east side of Flat Bay).

[Maine-birds] Mourning Warbler in Bangor, 07/23

Hi everyone,

This morning, I made a quick jaunt over to the marsh north of Judson Blvd and Broadway in Bangor. This was just before the heat really took hold (I didn't even know it could get this hot up here!). I was surprised to find a Mourning Warbler pop out of a small island of trees in the overgrown field. This was my second visit to this nice little marsh - the highlight of my first visit here on 07/12 was a very cooperative American Bittern.

Today's checklist, along with a photo of the Mourning can be found here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S19195856

Good birding,

URGENT ACTION: CHANGE GLASS, SAVE BIRDS

arrow pointing at letter

Dear Carl,

The Minnesota Vikings' new stadium could kill thousands of migratory birds unless the stadium's builders take immediate action to incorporate bird safe measures.

At issue is the type of glass being used in the largely-glass exterior of the massive new stadium. Current plans call for a type of glass that birds are less likely to see, thus inviting deadly collisions.

Last week the Vikings and the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority (MSFA) rejected Audubon's recommendation to use safer types of glass that could help save thousands of birds from fatally colliding with the stadium's huge windows.

Urge the Vikings and the MSFA to reverse course immediately and use safer glass.

The cost of using bird friendly glass is less than one tenth of one percent of the overall cost of the new billion dollar stadium. The site of the stadium is less than a mile from the Mississippi River, along which tens of millions of birds fly between their breeding and wintering grounds every year.

Unless the Vikings and the MSFA reverse course, the new stadium could become a serious threat to Minnesota's birds.

Please act today to urge the stadium's builders to make the right choice — use safer glass!

[Maine-birds] Peregrines in Waterville?

Hello All,

I was just wondering if there is/was a known nesting pair of Peregrine Falcons in Waterville this year? I saw two birds hunting rock doves over Main Street, about two blocks down from the opera house last Saturday and it got me thinkin'. There is enough food for them and some taller buildings. Maybe?

Cheers,

Mathias

[Maine-birds] Peregrines fledged.

Frenchman Bay 7/22/14
The two Peregrines on the Ironbound Island nest appear to have fledged. There was no sign of them at the nest under the raspberry bush on the south cliffs this afternoon and there were two immature Peregrines flying around the area.

[Maine-birds] Frazer Point, Schoodic Peninsula

Pretty birdy 7-8 this AM. Best place was right at the turnoff to the parking area, where many birds were flying back and forth across the road. 7 warbler species seen (Chestnut-sided heard only). Highlights were a female Nashville and a gorgeous male Blackburnian. Also RB Nuthatch, RE Vireo, Downies, many Chickadees.

The open area at the top of the Blueberry Trail had several warblers; also Eastern Phoebe, Alder Flycatcher (heard only), 2-3 Hermit Thrush, Waxwings.

Just a beautiful morning on the peninsula.

[Maine-birds] Cool opportunity to see a Juvenile White Ibis--Rye Harbor, NH

If you live in southern Maine or are planning a trip to the NH coast, there's currently a vagrant juvenile White Ibis that's hanging out in the Rye Harbor area. Most predictable time to see it is around high tide

https://www.flickr.com/photos/decksidethoughts/14529827188/ - evening high tide 7/20
https://www.flickr.com/photos/decksidethoughts/14529831198/ - morning high tide 7/21

I've attached a map of the general location on Rt 1-A where it's been seen most frequently.

It's a real treat to watch it fly in.

Enjoy!

Re: [Maine-birds] essex woods/bog

That particular spot is just great Veery habitat.   Alders flanked by taller conifers in a secluded (largely inaccessible by people) swampy bog with tons of mosquitos, Veeries seem to love it and I think there are a few breeding pairs there.    Snowshoe Hare frequent the same area (where I saw a Gray Fox recently) as well as Rusty Blackbirds making spring migration stopovers, as we saw earlier this year.

I've been hearing a lot of singing from veery thrushes lately. We've always been told that they are denizens of the woods, but I see and hear more of them in more open areas, often near water. They've been noisy lately. Does anyone have an explanation?
