[Maine-birds] Great blue heron eating an eel-Eagle Lake MDI

This guy came out from behind a bush carrying an eel wrapped around it's bill. As the drama proceeded, the eel kept tight to the bill as the heron strutted back and forth. Finally, over dry ground, the heron gained victory and the eel straightened out long enough to be consumed.
I'm thinking that, right after capture, because eel's are very strong, the heron took the eel to dry land so as not to lose it's catch. From the time Deb and I saw it moving towards the water until the eel was subdued an eaten, perhaps fifteen minutes past. Great wildlife drama to witness. I wish I could show you the other 60 images.

Anyone feel sorry for the eel?

Cheers,
Dave
