Hi all,
Purple Martins will be arriving soon, and this year, Belgrade is ready for them! As many of you know, last year, Don Mairs and I spearheaded an effort to restore the Purple Martin colony on Depot Road in Belgrade .
After installing one new modern gourd array last year (which fledged one nest, despite us getting it up rather late in the season), this winter, thanks to Norman Beaudoin, Don and Mary Hammond, and Hammond Lumber the entire colony has been rebuilt and restored! In the future, we look to add more gourds and/or another large wooden house that was graciously donated.
This colony has been enjoyed by birders and local residents for many decades, but I need to gently remind people that it is indeed on private property. Please do not park in the driveway or enter the yard. Parking along the road is absolutely fine, and please limit your viewing from the road to respect the property and privacy of the martins' hosts. Unfortunately, not everyone respected that last summer, and the last thing we want to do is to inconvenience the property owners and residents who have been instrumental in allowing us to keep this colony going.
And keep an eye open, they should be back any day now!
Many thanks,
Derek
