[Maine-birds] Long-tailed Ducks at Lake Josephine Easton

Yesterday, while doing some breeding bird atlassing at Lake Josephine in Easton, I observed six drake Long-tailed Ducks in the middle of the pond.  These molting ducks were decidedly UN long tailed and had mostly molted from the winter plumage that we see during winter to a chocolatey brown tone.  These were my latest I've recorded in the state.

There were lots of post-breeding drake waterfowl around the perimeter of the lake including Northern Shoveler, Blue-winged Teal, American Wigeon, Gadwall and Common Goldeneye.

The first waterfowl broods have emerged from the wetlands around Lake Jo with fuzzy Mallards and Canada Goose goslings in evidence.  I was able to confirm breeding for 7 species during my visit, including multiple pairs of Eastern Kingbirds building nests and Ring-billed Gulls carrying minnows from the pond to the nearby breeding colony at the McCain Foods factory nearby.  Here's my list: https://ebird.org/atlasme/view/checklist/S46388382.

This afternoon I'll be leading a bird walk here as part of the Northern Maine Birding Festival being held this weekend.

Good Birding
