[Maine-birds] Dyer Pt, Cape Eliz late afternoon

Hi all -- The perennial Harlequins are on station at Dyer Point. In today's strong onshore winds, high tide, and significant chop, I was only able to pick out 5 of 'em. Also 4 N. Gannets and 3 Ww Scoters flew by. Around the white-washed brick building there were 2 White-crowned Sparrows, 2 Song Sparrows and a few juncos.

At Pond Cove (also in Cape Eliz) I found an offshore R-t Loon in my scope while a Carolina Wren trilled behind me.

Nice way to end October; and more nutritious than Snickers bars for Halloween.

Cheers,
Craig K

[Maine-birds] Sandy Point Morning Flight, 10/31.

Hi all,
A light flight passed over and through Sandy Point Beach, Cousin's Island, Yarmouth this morning. There was nice diversity for the late date, and the dawn was crisp but very pleasant. Based on the upcoming forecast, the late date, and my schedule, this was quite possibly my last visit of the season, so it was nice to finish solidly - and not shivering!

[Maine-birds] Not Great Black Hawk

Thanks to all for replies to my request for ID help. I am now certain the bird I saw was NOT the Black Hawk. Most likely a juvenile eagle. Good luck to other birders!

[Maine-birds] Great Black Hawk ID?

I just had a not great view of a raptor soaring high over area where GRBH was seen this am. Long all dark wings and darkish tail. Looked like lots of whitish in chest but rest of body mottled dark. There was also some white in rump area but too high to tell where. Can't rule out other raptors. Does anyone have a photo of the bird soaring? Does my description rule it out?

[Maine-birds] COMMON (MEW) GULL - Biddeford, 10/28

Just got a text from Logan Kahle who found a first-cycle COMMON GULL (L. c. canus) around 1:00PM at Etherington Pond in Biddeford, across from Fortunes Rocks Beach. The bird was last seen flying south and hasn't been relocated but Logan is still looking and I'm sure more eyes on the scene would help.

[Maine-birds] big birds and little ones

I stopped on Knox Ridge this morning and counted 17 Bald Eagles at the composting facility, 3 juveniles the rest adults, most I have seen there since last winter.  I then observed a family of crows at Hilltop raiding the dumpster, one acting as lookout while the other 2 disappeared into its depths.

The feeders are busy this afternoon in driving snow mix;

3 bluejays discovered there are peanuts and have been selecting them out to cache.

2 Hairy woodpeckers

1 downy woodpecker

4 Titmice

10 + chickadees

RB nuthatches

WB nuthatches

1 Yellow-rumped warbler sneaking under the woodpeckers to eat suet

12+ Juncos in the barnyard and lawn below eating weed seeds presumably, they have not hit the feeders yet

6 + mixed Song + Whitethroated sparrows with the juncos

1 Raven checking for discarded eggs

1 obnoxious red squirrel that won't get off the big feeder.

[Maine-birds] Wow..Wow...Wow - Island Fallout

On this gorgeous day, we were on Swans Island (off Bass Hbr - MDI) and the minute we disembarked the ferry, began our extraordinary immersion in migrants. They were everywhere in HUGE numbers. As thick as Black Flies in June.

Birds sprayed off the road side almost continuously, like rainwater from our tires, as we drove island roads. Sparrows were predominant with Juncos, Song, White-throated, White-crowned and Chipping most obvious.

But, thrushes were there in astonishing numbers, as well, as were Yellow-rumped Warblers. The second most common warbler were Palm's but there were many others that I'd like to have spent time going after, had we had the time to do so.

What a treat!

[Maine-birds] Common Eider raft at Unity Pond

I stopped by Unity Pond at 10:30 AM today and was surprised to see a raft of ~200 eiders, both males and females, at the center of the lake.  I don't know how long they will be there, as this is probably a migration stop from the St. Lawrence Seaway.

[Maine-birds] Red- breasted and sparrows finally.

Nice to see a Red-breasted Nuthatch here in Sanford too. Unusual in my yard.  Now that I've put a feeder out there are finally 4 White-throated Sparrows and a few juncos too. It is that time of year anyway, when birds are just mo ing. The sparrows which I usually have seen on the ground doing their little dance to get to seed, were doing their best to get seed from the feeder.

[Maine-birds] Gray birds 10/23

On the Dutton Hill barren yesterday, I watched an immature Northern Shrike capture, kill (by banging it against a branch) and stash a Golden-crowned Kinglet. A sobering display. Those masked bandits seem well dressed for the part. Also, a couple Lincoln's Sparrows in amongst their family group.

On the Mayall Road fields there were at least three clear Cackling Geese among the ~800 or so Canadas. Also, 2 Sandhill Cranes, ~ 20 American Pipits, ~35 Horned Larks, and a Lapland Longspur.

[Maine-birds] Re: New England Cottontail

Guess this will finish up this non-bird discussion but I received a reply from Cory Stearns at the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.  He shared this info:

This rabbit was released as part of Maine's translocation program. He was born at Queen's Zoo in New York this summer, and was released at Two Lights SP on 9/21/18. Being born in captivity he is probably just used to having people around, so he didn't perceive you as a threat until you were very close to him.

So it's a New England Cottontail, not an Eastern, and there's an article about their recent southern Maine re-introduction program:

(thanks to Scott Richardson for the link)

I hope it can somehow avoid the Gray Foxes which are crazy prolific around here.   Been seeing families of Grays all season, and I snapped some pics of a very well-fed looking bunch dining on fermented crab apples on someone's lawn in broad daylight a short time ago.

[Maine-birds] Monday 22 Oct- Jonesboro-Roque Bluffs- huge sparrow migration

At 9:15 in the morning we drove from Johnson Cove Rd via Roque Bluffs Rd to Great Cove Rd ending at Rte 1 - and between 4:00 and 5:00pm returning the same route and adding Roque Bluffs State Park to boat launch at Long Pond --all along the way, morning and later- many many many small flocks of sparrows, 80%- 90% DEJU, WTSP, the remainder Tree Sparrows, and White-crowned with (at the park) Savannah Sparrows.
We have never seen this many sparrows at one time in one area ever. There were probably thousands, but since it was difficult to count, the birds being in the shrubs when not on the gravel at the roadside, I will say, at the very least, hundreds of birds. The Juncos were especially overwhelming in their numbers all along the way. Sometimes every few hundred yards a flock of them.
It was an astonishing experience for us.We didn't have opportunity to stop in the morning (having a scheduled appt.) but on the way back we stopped several times (the road is narrow with many glacial moraine "dips" so it is difficult to park without causing a dangerous situation for the infrequent traffic which doesn't usually include parked birders. Roque Bluffs State Park had shadows, but in the sunny spots the birds were there along Schoppee Rd.
On busy Rte 1 the traffic must have scattered the flocks because there weren't many to be seen.
I thought I would see many reports of this today. Did no one else have these sparrows in abundance?

[Maine-birds] 1 Snow Bunting in St. Albans

This morning, while duck hunting at St. Albans Wildlife Management Area, a single Snow Bunting flew over the marsh, calling and circling for about 10 minutes.  I had good looks with the binoculars and the flight calls were correct for the species.  Only one was spotted, though.  Sadly, the waterfowl flight this morning was very weak, with a few groups of Canada's, along with 1 flock of black ducks and 1 flock of Ring-necked ducks.

Hi guys,

Aside from the usual suspects for this time of year (chickadee, nuthatch,
titmice), I've been seeing lots of tiny brown birds at my feeders. My
novice eyes immediately thought sparrow of some kind but I have no idea if
thats right, or which one. They're very, very small. Here's the best pic
I could take along with one of the same bird next to a chickadee for size
comparison. Hopefully someone will be able to help satisfy my curiosity.

Thanks much!
Brad

Hi all,
For the second day in a row, it was an unexpectedly great flight passing over and through Sandy Point Beach, Cousin's Island, Yarmouth. Usually, a southwesterly component (beginning after 1:00am) squashes the flight here, but obviously, it did not today.

My feeders are being overwhelmed by Pine Siskins to the point where other species can not find space to get to the Sunflower Meaties..

I had a very unexpected Dickcissel in downtown Portland this morning in the trees along the weedy overgrown edge of the parking lot next to Hub Furniture and across from Fore St. Restaurant, on Fore Street between Pearl St and Franklin St. No bins, but unmistakable vocalizations.

This is one of those spots with just enough vegetation and a few trees to support a flock of House Sparrows, which persist year round on a stream of tourist bread crumbs from nearby Standard Bakery.

First time visiting this patch for a while despite it being close to my house. There was a decent amount of activity in the weeds and brush that has grown up since they thinned out the woods. A Fox Sparrow that was with a group of White-throated Sparrows was the most unexpected find of the visit.

I also birded my neighborhood and turned up several large mixed groups of sparrows with high numbers of White-crowned Sparrows mixed in.

Happy fall birding,

I was at Mud Cove, Lily Bay, Moosehead for the last 5 days and had a few
interesting sightings:

4 Canada Jays
6 White Throated Sparrows
lots of Juncos
6 loon - 2 winter plumage or juveniles
Found the remains of one Ruffed Grouse, and one live. The remains had what
looked like large bird droppings near it.
1 Ruby Crowned Kinglet
1 Northern waterthrush, bobbing tail
4 Horned larks - on exposed rocks and beach where the water has recently
dropped
4 Hooded Merganser (on small pond nearby)
8 flying Common Mergansers, 1 braving the 30 mph wind and waves out front
Thursday
1 Greater Yellowlegs (feeding in a small inlet on the road to the Lily Bay
Storehouse)
1 Ring Billed Gull that decided it liked the bread I put in the feeder, and
4-5 others

Submitted full list to ebird,

Doug Hitchcox and I cruised around Cape Elizabeth for a few hours this afternoon.

Highlights at Two Lights SP were a late Yellow-billed Cuckoo (an overdue state bird for me!) and brief looks at a Dickcissel. At Kettle Cove, the Lapland Longspur continues and a pair of American Pipits were incredibly obliging.
