Re: [Maine-birds] Louisiana Waterthrush

Hello All,

I would really like to encourage people to go looking for these birds anywhere.  I am afraid that it is just too tempting for people to overrun the known locaitons with tapes etc.

I have found them in Androscoggin County in nearly every fast-moving shaded stream headed down into a lake or river that I have checked.

I would love to know how far up the watersheds of the major rivers they occur.  And on the tributaries of which lakes.  Are they in Oxford County?  I bet they are.  How many other counties?

The next month or so is the time to find them.  Even with my hearing loss their loud distinctive call is easy to hear above the burbling streams.

The most northern one I have so far is in Poland.  (2 locations) and Minot/Mechanic Falls (3 locations).  I want to push that range north into Livermore Falls.  Some likely streams on the River Road that I have not checked yet.  Would be happy to have someone beat me to it.

In the spirit of avian adventure,

Thanks to Linda's post, I finally found a Louisiana Waterthrush -- two, in fact. The first was loudly audible before I stepped out of the car at 8:20 this morning, singing from just downstream of the bridge. I spent several fruitless minutes trying to spy the bird before it flew upstream. I followed to the other side of the bridge and was treated to what looked like a brief territorial clash. The original male was apparently being turned back downstream and found a safe spot directly in front of me where it sang and twirled its tail. The second bird staked a spot nearby and sang a few times before heading further upstream.

I've always struck out while looking for the species at this traditional spot and was happy to break the drought.

For those unfamiliar with the location, it's easy to access along Coles Hill Road off Route 1 in Wells. Be very cautious, as the road twists and turns and the "parking lot" is more like a shoulder pulloff in a blind spot.

We found the Louisiana Waterthrush at  Merriland River in Wells on Coles Hill Rd.  We were lucky that the parking lot was full and we had to park on the other side of the river since the bird was singing right next to the road. With all the water running we would not have heard it from the parking lot.
