Bradbury Mountain State Park
Pownal, Maine, USA
Visitors:
22 people visited the hawkwatch today. This included a 2 hour visit from University of New England's ornithology class. I wish we had more hawks to look at when they were there in the morning, but conditions were pretty pleasant and we had good looks at Pine Warbler and Golden-crowned Kinglets in the trees at the summit.
Weather:
The day did not turn out as gusty as I had feared. Winds were out of the west all day, but finally switched a bit to the SW during the last hour when the stronger winds finally kicked in. Temperatures climbed steadily to around 65F. The sun tried to break through the overcast sky in the middle of the day, but couldn't quite do it.
Raptor Observations:
I was expecting more of a flight out of this day, but it was pretty slow overall. I suspect the persistent cloud cover and west (rather than SW) winds contributed. However, in the last hour, the winds tilted just slightly to the SW and picked up, and all of a sudden I was getting a little small falcon and Sharpie flight. I stayed an extra 15 minutes since these birds were still flying.
Non-raptor Observations:
27 species were seen or heard from the summit today. Those deemed migrating included: 229 Common Grackles 46 Double-crested Cormorants 9 Tree Swallows 1 Great Blue Heron
Predictions:
It looks like another windy day tomorrow, out of the NW. It will be a little cooler than today but still unseasonably warm. Sky conditions should be pretty good for spotting birds with mixed sun and clouds.
