Bradbury Mountain State Park
Pownal, Maine, USA
Visitors:
Most folks who ventured up to the summit today stopped by the Hawkwatch, totaling 18.
Weather:
Completely overcast skies hung on for the entire day. However, visibility was decent, never losing sight of the water. There was basically no wind to speak of which is highly unusual here. Temperatures climbed to 50F. The key feature of today's weather was the stalled front in southern York County which moved a continuous train of rain from west to east, immediately to our south.
Raptor Observations:
Things were looking pretty grim after the second hour when I had still not seen a single raptor - migrating or otherwise. The first local birds (some Turkey Vultures) finally made an appearance at 11:30EDT. For 2 hours in the early afternoon the wind became perceptible out of the SW and vultures were on the move, along with a handful of other hawks. The last 2 hours of the count were just as slow as the first.
Non-raptor Observations:
31 species were observed from the summit today, including first-of-year Northern Flicker and Hermit Thrush. Common Grackles were moving this morning, keeping things a little interesting. One Evening Grosbeak was heard passing behind the summit. Birds deemed migrating included: 546 Common Grackles 9 Red-winged Blackbirds 7 Killdeer 4 Canada Geese 3 duck sp 3 Tree Swallows 2 American Goldfinches 1 American Black Duck 1 Great Blue Heron 1 Evening Grosbeak
Predictions:
Tomorrow is not looking so good. Gusty NE winds in the morning and cold temperatures are likely to combine for unpleasant conditions and few birds. However, lighter winds in the afternoon may allow a few birds to move ahead of approaching precipitation.
