I spent an hour and a half birding around Biddeford Pool on Sunday afternoon from 4:45 - 6:00.
I started at Vines Landing where I saw the following:
Highlights include:
Near Vines Landing:
- 2 American Oystercatchers resting on rocks at low tide off Stage Island (large and stocky; yellow eyes and long, thick , red bill)
- a Bald Eagle flying east past the marker on Stage Island
- 5 Common Loons in various stages of plumage
- 38 Common Eider
- 3 Red-Breasted Mergansers (1 male, 2 female)
Near the pond at Marie Joseph:
- Merlin flying across the road from the pond by the Marie Joseph spiritual center
- Black-Crowned Night Heron on the shore next to South Point sanctuary
- 2 Canada geese
- 1 Mallard (male)
Off Ocean Ave:
- Black Guillemot off of the point on Ocean Ave. (plumage in transition)
- 1 female Common Goldeneye
- 7 Long-Tail Ducks
- 27 Common Eider
Many Common Grackles and Red Winged Blackbirds
Time well spent.
