Hi Linda,
Thank you for explaining the role of Paul Garrity in the scheme of Maine
Birding. He and I had many wonderful discussions over those early
list-serve years and he was an inspiration to my work on Mount Desert
Island, helping spreading the gosple of Birding through communicating about
birds on the new and exciting internet. He was a visionary and he had the
academic capacity that has driven CHANGE through ecological awareness!
I know many people were part of the first Maine list serve that Paul started
and they also had important connections moving us to the point we are today
and this current list serve that we all depend on to communicate our bird
data.
The early 90's were transitional years for Maine and through Paul Garrity
and his early work we (collectively) have transformed Maine Birding into an
important economic driver, especially in Hancock and Washington Counties
....and we certainly have Paul to thank for that. The Science that his work
has generated is probably incalculable and will be useful for many years to
come.
Thanks for your kind words Linda and thanks to Paul for his dedication to
Maine Ornithology. I was greatly indebted when he first started because he
saw the value and importance in my work on Mount Desert Island and helped
promote ornithology in the Gulf of Maine through the concept of ECOTOURISM.
Thank you Paul for your vision
Michael

Subject: [Maine-birds] Paul Garrity
It is with deep sadness, that I report that Paul Garrity passed last
Friday. I do not know the details, although I know he had been battling
cancer for some time. For some of you that are new to the listserv, you
may not know that it was Paul who started the Maine Bird listserv. He
also has a great web site, mainebirding.net. He truly was the pioneer
in bringing Maine Birding to the new medium of listservs and the
internet. Paul was an excellent photographer. His photographs of
birds, flowers and nature are exceptional. He especially enjoyed
photographing Scarborough Marsh.
Besides his interest in birds, Paul gave back to others in many ways.
He provided Maine Audubon and other nonprofits with many photographs for
brochures, web sites etc. He also always came to the Scarborough Marsh
clean-up. He would bring his truck and haul the heavy loads.
I will miss his warm smile and his kind and generous spirit.
