Here at the office this morning we were greeted upon arrival by an
adult Bald Eagle that flew in and perched across the river for a while
before flying past our windows at eye level and heading downriver. It
made the Mallards and Black Ducks very nervous while it was here,
naturally. It was also here yesterday morning.
I was actually outside looking for Pine Grosbeaks when the eagle flew
in. A co-worker had seen one upriver on his way in to work (in
addition to some Buffleheads), and since I think I'm the only birder
in Maine who hasn't come across any yet (yes, I've looked), I was
hoping it would head this way. While out there, I saw:
WB Nuthatch-3
BC Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse
Downy Woodpecker-1
Cardinal-1
Canada Goose-1 (forerunner of the flock that grazes here daily)
Usual local jays and crows, ignoring the eagle
Our office crabapple--which in the past has drawn winter bluebirds and
Bohemian Waxwings--didn't fruit this year, so I'm afraid my hope of
having a PIGR show up in the yard here is destined to remain
unfulfilled.
Cheers!
