[Maine-birds] Re: Addison Marsh, Great yellow-legs, Am widgeon and galwall

Bob,

Addison is in Washington County.  Rte. 1 passes through the north part of Addison at a location called Four Corners.  There are several large stores near the "crossroad".  To get to the marsh coming from Ellsworth, turn right at the intersection (Machias Savings Bank, a gas station and hardware store surround the intersection).  If you pass it there are several large busineses on the left immediately beyond the turn  (Elmers or Elmers Barn, then a grocery store).

After turning right, follow the road for more than a mile (less than two miles, I think) and bear right at the next road.  You are in the Village of Additson. Continue past the post office.  After you cross a small bridge, the boat launch is on your left.  If the tide is out, look under the bridge.  There are culverts that had clapper valves to keep water from entering the marsh becuase people used to cut marsh hay there.  The valves were eventually removed or opened to restore salt water tidal flow into the marsh.

I scan the marsh from the boat launch and the approach to the bridge over the Pleasant River (Turn back toward the post office and turn right at the first road a few hundred yards from the boat launch).  There are some nice salt pannes next to both sides of the road that can have lots of shorebirds in, especially during the fall migration.  It is also a good place to scan distant salt pannes.  If you drive closer to the bridge, a bunch of smaller salt pannes are hiding below.

Good luck if you venture to the marsh.

Hi birders,

I stopped at the Addison Marsh yesterday afternoon and scanned the marsh across from the boat launch.  Nice group of birds present in the salt pannes and along the shore slightly downstream.

2  Greater yellow-legs
1  Dunlin
1  Red-throated loon  (I would like to say salt panne but it was on the river) first for me at this location
1  Double-crested cormorant
55 Black ducks
36 Mallards (high count for me at the marsh)
1  Blue-winged teal
9  Green-winged teal
1  Gadwall
3  Am widgeon (2 males)
4  Canada geese (low for this time of year, did not count the entire marsh)
~300 Ring-billed gulls
~50 Herring gulls
+ Great bkacj-backed gull
The gull breakdown was a guestimate

Good birding,
