As I’m sure many birders experienced today, a lot of migrants snuck in last night. A FOY Northern Parula and Black-&-White Warbler woke me up this morning on the northern end of Pushaw Lake in Hudson. A subsequent paddle down Pushaw Stream yielded many Northern Waterthrushes and a few Swamp Sparrows that arrived last night.
However, the most interesting part of the paddle was the chorus of leopard frogs along the length of the stream from the lake to Route 41.
I mention this mostly to remind local folks that paddling Pushaw Stream at the tail end of April and the first couple of weeks of May can be really productive. Whoever is first to paddle in the day will likely flush a variety of ducks that like the seclusion. We had mallard, black, GW teal, common merganser today, but other species also come in regularly.
