So far, my request for identification of two (what I called broad-winged hawks) has resulted in four helpful responses from folks whom I respect greatly. Two for coopers and two for northern goshawk.
Size and sound, not available by the photo, and more comparisons after help from you-all have left me with the decision to call it a northern goshawk.
A very sincere thanks to all who helped.
