Just spent 3 days birding around northern Maine with the Hampshire Bird Club from western Mass. The group was enthusiastic and game for 10 hour days and thats what we did. The weather was fantastic and decent early pulses of migrants and good luck allowed us to find 115 species in the area.
-- Highlights included a Common Gallinule at Christina Reservoir in Fort Fairfield, a White-rumped Sandpiper at Caribou wastewater treatment ponds and a Great Egret in Mars Hill.
Rarely reliable in northern Maine, shorebirds were quite numerous and well-represented with 9 species seen. In addition to the White-rump, a couple late Upland Sandpipers at the Loring runway in Limestone and 52 Killdeer in a single flock in Easton were notable.
We found fifteen species of warblers with Tennessee seen at Aroostook NWR being the standout species-wise. Hatch-year Yellow Warbler numbers were impressive (high double digits) for this early migrant and a Palm Warbler was carrying food and scolding a Gray Jay at the Muscovic Road in Stockholm. This seems especially late for this early-arriving breeder and suggests a second brood here.
The Aroostook NWR also offered up some good looks at a Philadelphia Vireo and wave of juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (at least 17 different).
Finch-wise, the only noteworthy birds were a couple of flyover Pine Siskins.
