Our summer season of boat tours ended today. During the past two weeks there were increases in the numbers of Black Scoters, Common Eiders, Common Loons, and Great Cormorants. Small vees of Double-crested Cormorants continued to pass by as of 10/28 and small flocks of Canada Geese were found resting on Egg Rock on several days. Bald Eagles, Harriers, and Sharp-shinned Hawks passed over the outer parts of the bay on several days during the last of Oct. with the final sightings on 10/22. Of interest was an unidentified female or immature hummingbird that passed low over the boat on 10/19.
Non-birds: Painted Lady butterflies were last seen crossing the bay on 10/20 and the last Monarch on 10/23.
Today we took the boat from Bar Harbor around the south side of Mt. Desert Island to the Hinckley boat yard in Southwest Harbor. Transit time 1.5 hours, distance 10 miles.
