Even before the storm it has been an extraordinary week at Roque Bluffs (Washington County).
-- Wally first spotted the Little Blue Heron in the tidal marsh along the Englishman's River Saturday afternoon (Oct 28), before the first part of the storm. Please- will someone with a good camera come and get a fantastic short of this bird! I posted a picture on e-bird but it is one of my pathetic fuzzy point and shoot attempts. The bird was still here late this afternoon at the edge of the river catching lots of something.
On Oct. 25 a red-necked grebe along with Common Eider in the bay near the mouth of the Englishman's River. On Oct. 28, there were 4 Gray Catbirds evenly spaced between our driveway and the river. Oct. 30, a Swainson's Thrush was in the yard for most of the afternoon and the next morning.
Today there were new arrivals and a tree near the river was full of Gray Catbirds, Robins and Starlings. Wally and I each saw warblers that we could not ID . I definitely saw a N. Parula but was unable to get a photo.
Down by the pier at Pond Cove (end of Schoppee Point Rd.) we saw Surf Scoters (got a good picture of those), two Common Loons, A male Long-Tail Duck, and a Black Guillemot. Off-shore, too far for our scope in the fading afternoon light, there were two rafts of many hundreds of small dark ducks. We are hoping that someone with better camera and telescope was there today or will come tomorrow. If tomorrow is a repeat of today it will be very interesting.
