[Maine-birds] Re: Weekly Birding Tour

Saw a flock of about 50-60 snow buntings on Sunday at the Bar Harbor airport. 3 savannah sparrows still there as well. Plus the usual: eiders, a few black ducks, and buffleheads, juncoes, herring gulls, and a few tree sparrows. And 2 airplanes...

Despite strong winds and bitter wind chills, we managed 32 species on our last Weekly Birding Tour. Highlights included Red-throated Loon and Northern Mockingbird. The forecast for this Wednesday morning is calling for mostly sunny, light winds, and temperatures hovering around the freezing mark.

It turns out I have to be in Bangor by about 11:30, so I am going to offer a slightly shortened version of the Weekly Birding Tour. This day, we will meet at the boat launch parking lot near the Bar Harbor Airport (turn off route 3 onto Caruso Drive, the road that goes to the airport; make your second right onto Ramp Road; go beyond Morris Yachts and you will see me there birding). We start by birding the north side of Mount Desert Narrows, then its off to Marlboro Beach. From there, time permitting, we may head up toward Ellsworth.

WHAT: Weekly Birding Tour
WHERE: Meet at boat ramp parking lot near Bar Harbor Airport (see attached map—the ramp is near Morris Yachts on the right side of the image)
WHEN: 8:00 a.m. — 11:00 p.m, Wednesday, 21 November

We will see what we can find, contributing our observations to the world's largest citizen-science project: eBird. And, of course, we will enjoy good camaraderie while working toward our MDI Bird Club "100" patch (identify 100 species on our tours and receive a 2" embroidered patch; see www.thenaturalhistorycenter.com/birdclub for details).
