Visitors:
A few new visitors to the site today, many of whom were a bit startled to learn the mountain doesn't extend any higher. 12 visitors in total.
Weather:
The day started out in the high 30's with cloudy skies and a stiff cool wind from the south. Visibility was great for about forty minutes before fog and mist moved in and reduced the view to about 1 mile. Winds died down substantially by late morning but the fog ebbed and flowed from the mountain for the remainder of the day.
Raptor Observations:
It's a really slow day when you can't even spot an Eagle from this site. A couple TV's came by a couple times.
Non-raptor Observations:
Each hour seemed like a repeat of the last with fair to poor and back to fair visibility and the occasional cawing of a crow. The highlight was a pair of Wood Ducks buzzing the mountain below eye level during the opening hour.
Predictions:
Tomorrow looks to be mostly cloudy with a possibility of lingering showers. Temps should be mild, in the low 50's. Winds should be picking up in the afternoon with some strong gusts. It shouldn't be too difficult to do better than today.

Visitors:
Not many Parkgoers either. A few people interested in the count who may come back another day. 14 visitors in total.
Weather:
It was another chilly start with blustery winds from the north. Most of the day was fairly windy with strong gusts. Periods of calm in the afternoon were very pleasant. Temps eventually warmed into the 40's. Visibility was ok with the best occurring near the closing bell. There were great species of clouds today with some nice Cirrus which looked like they had been smeared by a palette knife.
Raptor Observations:
Not much yet again. A few Turkey Vultures were hanging around along with some Red-tails, which at least gave us something to look at. Our first Osprey of the season was spotted mid morning about a mile away as it was hovering over a local brook to the southwest.
Non-raptor Observations:
Very slow and quiet up there. An Eastern Phoebe was a welcome sound to break the monotony of wind and passing cars. Dave and I searched all over for a bird of any kind later in the day, and it was a bit of a struggle. We turned up a couple of Ravens but that's about it. 2 Killdeer a couple Purple Finches and a Goldfinch were the only birds traveling north, that I could find.
Predictions:
Tomorrow looks to be mostly overcast with highs in the 40's. A warm front will be approaching and with it some rain. Precip potential should remain low throughout the day with an increasing chance of showers later in the day. Heavier rains will likely occur after dark. The approaching evening rain looks like it could be close enough to have an effect on the daytime flight. It'll be interesting to see what moves out ahead.

Hi all,
Read More :- "[Maine-birds] Possible Trumpeter Swan Pelreco"
I think Brad Woodward's Tundra Swan may be a Trumpeter Swan. Not 100% sure and have no size comparisons, but this is a mostly white swan with dark bill (no yellow on lores but not all Tundras have yellow). Also has rufous on the head which extends down the neck which is line with some Trumpeters. Not sure if that is just a result of staining though.
Still being seen now at 12:53 behind the Pelreco Building at the Scarborough Marsh.

[Maine-birds] Possible tundra swan at Pelreco
There is what appears to be a tundra swan at the tell Pelreco building on Scarborough Marsh. The bird is solid white with a tannish neck and head. The bill appears to be solid black with no hint of orange. The neck is very straight without the S curve of a mute. It is straight out, at the far edge directly across from the parking area as of 10:30 a.m.

Visitors:
10 people stopped by to ask about the Hawkwatch today. Surprisingly, a couple of folks had binoculars, hoping to see a few hawks. Unfortunately, today just was not the day for that. Hopefully they will return under better conditions.
Weather:
Wind. So much wind. Another cold blustery day up at the summit today with N and NW winds howling. The temperature finally hit the freezing point by the 6th hour, but refused to go up any higher. Mostly sunny skies at least made things feel a little better.
Raptor Observations:
Not much. No raptors were counted until the 6th hour when 3 Turkey Vultures were deemed migrating. This accounted for 3/4 of today's tally. Local birds were not out and about much either, with a couple of Bald Eagles in the morning and Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks in the afternoon.
Non-raptor Observations:
Again, not much. A mere 11 species were observed from the summit today. One lone Killdeer calling as it passed by to the north was the only migrant.
Predictions:
With high pressure building over us tomorrow, it is forecast to be warmer than the past couple of days with temperatures getting up into the mid-40s. The day will start out sunny, but clouds will be increasing in the afternoon. We are still looking at NW winds, however as they abate throughout the day we are hoping for a little push of birds ahead of the next storm system that will be moving in Thursday.

Visitors:
More visitors on a Monday than I thought I'd see. 22 people in total, including a gentlemen who used to volunteer at Hawk Mountain in Pennsylvania.
Weather:
It's frustrating when it seems as though all my weather forecasts turn out incorrect but I wasn't to upset getting today wrong. It was a much more tolerable day than I was anticipating. The winds from the northwest were certainly chilly, with temps below freezing, but the strong gusts never came. The unfiltered sun for most of the day helped temper the effects of the colder air. The heat shimmer was terrible today but not a huge issue with so few birds. The clapboards on the red barn situated .75miles away appeared to be moving like a snake in the distorted air.
Raptor Observations:
Not many observations were made but not from lake of effort. An adult Eagle with feet and talons extended came towards the summit and dropped below the trees into the park, somewhere near the playground.
Non-raptor Observations:
15 species were seen or heard today. Birds traveling north include: 3 American Robins 1 Common Merganser
Predictions:
Tomorrow's forecast looks like another repeat of today. So will it be more mild than predicted or actually play out? I will be preparing for temps around the freezing mark with winds from the northwest at 10-15mph with gusts in the mid 20's. Sky cover should be minimal. We may have to put up with some inclement weather this week before the next good push of birds.

Visitors:
37 people stopped by the count site. The parkgoers cleared out at about the same rate as the raptors. I was mostly alone for the final hours and I was the last vehicle in the lot when I left.
Weather:
A pretty similar day as yesterday with the addition of some water. Clear skies early started to fill in with clouds mid morning. Winds at the summit remained fairly calm but Portland was reporting higher speeds with strong gusts. Visibility improved from good to excellent in lockstep with the increasing cloud cover. Later in the day a few saturated clouds shed a few drops and a couple got me. I'm not as spry as I once was.
Raptor Observations:
A very uneventful day for raptors. A displaying Coop started the day along with a close flyby of an immature 'shoulder and some pesky Eagles. After that the skies became very still. A late day Harrier tried to blend in with some distant TV's, but I hadn't quite fallen asleep at the scope.
Non-raptor Observations:
Uneventful for passerines to. Often when the raptors aren't flying I can at least count or watch other birds but not today. Once I had left the site for the day I found many of those birds holding out in the nearby yards and fields. We did have our FOY Eastern Phoebe and Double-crested cormorants. The complete list of birds spotted moving north today include, drumroll please: 128 Blackbird spp 15 Canada Geese 29 Common Grackles 5 Red-winged Blackbirds 3 Double-crested Cormorants 1 Common Merganser 1 American Robin 1 American Goldfinch 1 Purple Finch 1 American Blackduck
Predictions:
Tomorrow looks like what we'd expect for the first days of the count. It's going to be much cooler and pretty windy. Air temps will be in the low 30's but feel like low 20's due to the northwest winds at 10-15mph and gusting to the mid 20's, later in the day. Sky cover should persist for the day. I wouldn't expect much if this was the start of the count but creeping up on April you never know what might come through. I don't think we'll be breaking records, that's for sure.

A beautiful day falling on a Saturday brought a lot of people to the park. People came and went in droves, at one point 41 people were standing on the summit. 30 people stopped by the count area. Among them some very excited inquisitive young birders, eager to share their bird knowledge. It was excited to see them so excited. Word on the street is Peregrines are pretty fast. Thanks to all the extra eyes today, that was helpful.
Weather:
Lots of blue sky in the morning disappeared above a solid layer of clouds by the end of the count. Temps were very comfortable, climbing into the low 50's. Winds were a little variable but light, switching between mostly west southwest and south. Visibility was not great due to the morning sun and heat distortion but after the clouds moved in the clarity returned.
Raptor Observations:
An ok mix of birds but a lower total than I might have guessed. Turkey Vultures made a push today and I feel we may have missed some due to poor spotting conditions in the morning hours. Many TV's were at the detection limit and I have a hunch there were probably more just out of reach. Eagles were a majestic nuisance yet again. A group of 4-7 continued to be spotted throughout the count stooping and chasing one another, talons out. A couple of them eventually made it on the board as they moved on to the north. Birds were scattered all about today, without any pattern or flight lines developing. Birds were high, low and far. Once the clouds packed in the flight really came to a halt in early afternoon. With about 90 minutes left in the count I spotted a heavily built looking bird behind tree tips, to our northwest. I was about to call it a 'tail as it began to disappear but it started to lift and look more Accipiter like. It was a Northern Goshawk. The bird circled over the summit for a minute or two and even with the cloud cover it was able to gain a substantial amount of lift as it drifted to the north.
Non-raptor Observations:
The morning flights seemed busy and I thought it would persist for longer. The big movers of the day were: 1553 Common Grackles 426 Canada Geese We had a couple First Of Year (FOY) birds including: 10 Tree Swallows 2 Great Blue Herons
Predictions:
Looks like another decent day tomorrow with a slight possibility of some pop-up showers in the afternoon. Light westerly winds may shift more northwest later in the day. Temps should be comfortable, in the 40's. Potentially good conditions for a good flight. I wouldn't mind a few more birds than we saw today and we'll find out soon enough.

[Maine-birds] EURASIAN WIGEON
Will I did not see it I thought people should know. John Lorenc found a Eurasian Wigeon in Brunswick today on Highland Rd. in Brunswick. Perhaps the same one that's been seen in the mid-coast recently. I believe Matt Gilbert found one on the Abby too a day or so ago. Nice finds guys!!

Visitors:
9 visitors today. A few came up for the first time as a result of Derek's radio interview yesterday, and seemed to enjoy their stay.
Weather:
The coastal plain was blanketed in clouds this morning and the air was chilly and damp. Clouds started to part throughout the morning with breaks of direct sun. Temps were mild in the 40's. Winds started from the west and northwest and shifted to the south and southeast by late afternoon, skipping over the southwest direction I was hoping for. With the morning clouds came some of the best visibility you can ask for. No heat distortion provided excellent clarity to landmarks and birds we typically wouldn't have perceived.
Raptor Observations:
Another slow start to the day. Birds didn't start to move until the sun was out. Local 'tails and Coop's were persistent in their display flights all day. A few more Eagles were migrating through and I felt more confident these weren't residents, as they were all seen high overhead moving steadily and directly north without hesitation. There were a few neck-breakers today as many of the birds spotted were straight up overhead, tiny specks even with optics. The highlight today was an afternoon Peregrine circling in a thermal to our east, lit up by the sun in the west.
Non-raptor Observations:
Pretty quiet all around. 24 species were seen or heard today including: 16 Canada Geese 7 Common Mergansers 3 Mallards 1 American Goldfinch 1 Red-winged Blackbird
Predictions:
Light winds from the west and southwest with mild temps climbing into the high 40's and maybe 50's. Clouds increase in the afternoon as more precipitation moves in. Maybe the birds we hoped to see today are holding out until tomorrow.

Couldn't tell ya.
Weather:
Unfortunately today's forecast was correct. Rain persisted throughout the day along with poor visibility. It looked like there was going to be a slight break in the mid afternoon but to no avail. Thanks to Derek and Jeannette for the team effort in helping keep an eye on the radar and checking visibility conditions which allowed me to accomplish some other tasks.
Raptor Observations:
Zilch
Non-raptor Observations:
Nada
Predictions:
The wet weather should persist during the overnight hours and be moving out of the area during the morning hours, leaving a chance of showers during the first start of the count. Clouds may be breaking up as the day carries, on with winds shifting from the northwest to the southwest by afternoon. Temps look mild, in the mid to upper 40's. Tomorrow afternoon holds promise, on paper anyway.

Hello Craig,
--
We just opened registration for our bird sound recording workshop which will be held May 15 - 20, 2022. This year, the program is in-person and it will be held at Schoodic Institute at Acadia National Park. There are commuter and residential options available. And, FYI, while smart phones are perfectly fine for digital audio recording, there is a limited amount of field recording equipment available for loan on a first-come, first-served basis.
For more information, and/or to register click here. Feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best,
Laura
P.S. Also, please share this email with anyone you think may be interested in the workshop. Thanks!

Visitors:
It was nice to see a few more pairs of binoculars on the mountain today. I wish there had been more birds to view. It was a pleasure chatting with everyone. I hope you all come back again. 20 visitors in total
Weather:
It was a bit of a cooler start today, with temps hovering right at the freezing mark. Meltwater on the summit trail had glazed over and there was a nice crunch underfoot from the frost heaves. The first half of the day was bright blue skies. High thin clouds moved in from the west southwest in the afternoon and the stormfront moving in for tomorrow became evident. The trees on the summit helped to shelter us from the light but consistent northerly breeze. Overall a pleasant day to be out.
Raptor Observations:
Skies were very quiet for hours today. Even local activity was minimal, with the exception of a pair of local Cooper's Hawks which spent most of the day performing their exaggerated deep wing beats, displaying throughout the area. Around 1pm there was a brief flurry of 4 species of migrants moving through overhead. I was a little surprised by the amount of elevation they had gained, appearing very high up. I don't believe we missed much due to birds disappearing overhead which is a concern on warm days with little cloud cover to provide contrast for our eyes. There just wasn't much of anything being seen.
Non-raptor Observations:
Despite the light winds where I was standing, the birds flying north could be seen struggling a bit. Geese were making very slow progress. Not much of a passerine flight today. I didn't see one Grackle or Red-winged blackbird. Even our hawkwatch Junco was shy today.
Predictions:
Rain! The forecasters sound pretty confident with their 100% chance of rain by 10am prediction. Rain along with some high winds from the east and southeast could persist during the entire count period. It could be a washout but I'll be fresh and ready to go when the opportunity to open the count arrives.

Today a beautiful male Purple Finch was singing in the yard. It's been 7 months (Aug. 18) since seeing any in this part of Oxford County although until then they were always here until snow season. Red-breasted Nuthatches have been the other big absentee. They were common year-round until early last October, when they seemed to dwindle and vanish from the feeders in the space of a couple of weeks. I haven't seen a RBNH in the area since Oct. 21. There must surely be more going on than the neighbor cutting down a few pasture pines on his property.
