Observation start time: 08:00:00 Observation end time: 16:00:00 Total observation time: 8 hours Official Counter Derek Lovitch, Jeannette Lovitch Observers:
Visitors:
12 people visited the Hawkwatch today. "Watch the first step. It's a doozie."
Weather:
This is the Hawkwatching version of the classic "Groundhog Day." "OK, campers, rise and shine, and don't forget your booties cause it's (easterly wind) out there...it's (easterly wind) out there every day." But Jeannette and I cannot really complain, we only had one day of this.
Raptor Observations:
"We must'n keep our audience waiting" said the local birds. Local pairs of Broad-winged Hawks and especially Bald Eagles were putting on a show today. A little southeasterly component in the last hour of the count yielded the same number of migrants (4) as the first half of the day.
Non-raptor Observations:
34 species were observed from the summit today, woefully low for may 10th. "It was the end of a VERY long day." Those deemed migrating included: 31 Double-crested Cormorants, 9 Tree Swallows, 8 Barn Swallows, 5 American Goldfinches, 3 Blue Jays, and 2 Common Grackles.
Predictions:
"You want a prediction about the weather? You're asking the wrong Phil." At least one more day of the same, although there may be a little more southeasterlies in the second half of the day. "Anything different is good." After that, however...well, we might not even need movie quotes in the daily report.
