[Maine-birds] American Pipit and Fox Sparrow at Walkers Pt

Pat Moynahan, Nancy Houlihan and I had some great birds today as we toured our section for the Biddeford-Kbunk CBC, especially at Walkers Point in Kbunkpt. A fox sparrow in the brush directly across from the Arundel Inn and FOUR American Pipits on the beach and snow right at the gates to the Bush compound. BTW, if you want to have a great day and lots of fun at a count, bird with these two! Also, a very late Piedbilled Grebe on Ocean Ave just as you leave the Port, the area near the Lobster Claw (and they make a great lobster roll - thanks for the grebe, Paul!)

[Maine-birds] LOY Peregrine, Sharpie and COGO Saco River, Downtown

As the sun is almost gone I figured I'd share these Last of Year sightings with you ;)

I saw the Peregrine prosecuting a flock of pigeons over Springs Island and Water Street in Saco this afternoon.  Then it landed on the post that supports the power lines in front of Deering Lumber on Elm St (Rt1) in Biddeford just passed the bridge from Saco onto Springs Island.

A flock of pigeons sat nervously on the power lines nearby.  Another raptor swooped in and at first I thought it was the second Peregrine, but it was actually a Sharp-Shinned Hawk.  The Peregrine sat around for about 15 minutes then took off after the Pigeons again.

This morning through dusk a single drake CoGo has been hanging out by my office.

A video of the CoGo (taken from my desk through my window) and the Peregrine, plus a short video of the Peregrine can be found in a shared folder on my skydrive.  These are not edited.  Feel free to view and share, but I'd appreciate attribution if sharing the files.  You can print them if you want they are uneditted 8 MegaPixel files so you should have no problem making a nice 8x10.

Have a HAPPY and a HEALTHY New Year!

[Maine-birds] Barrow's Goldeneye - South Portland

There was a drake Barrow's Goldeneye behind Paulin's Tire on Broadway in South Portland this afternoon. On the other side of the street, behind the carwash, there were 2 drake Green-Winged Teals and a hen American Wigeon with the commoners. Also a pair of Hooded Mergansers were present which I thought was worth mentioning because of their odd beauty.

[Maine-birds] Great Cormorant in Gardiner

A juvenile Great Cormorant was sitting on the ice at the Gardiner waterfront park just now.  Seems like an annual, but uncommon, event.

Pine Grosbeaks continue in Gardiner this week at several locations.

Happy New Year!

[Maine-birds] Field Sparrow in Berwick

Glanced out at a sparrow on our close-to-the-house hanging feeder and realized it wasn't a tree sparrow. It's the first Field Sparrow for our Berwick yard this year and not when I'd have expected it!

Also unexpected was a trio of Horned Larks flying over after the big snow earlier this week, #135 on the yard list. Quite a finish for the year. Looking forward to the "reset" in a few hours. Happy 2013, all.

Re: [Maine-birds] Vultures pick at visitor's cars in the Everglades

Perhaps a bit off topic, avian-wise at least, but my favorite car
attack incident occurred at a "wildlife safari" drivethrough park near
Niagra Falls. After being warned NOT TO FEED THE MONKEYS, the folks
ahead of us immediately rolled down their rear window and offered a
ripe banana. A scurrying troupe of monkeys (I don't recall the
species) mounted the hood and roof of the car and began snapping off
the car's radio attenna. When we encountered the vehicle again at the
end of the tour, the monkeys had extracted about two-thirds of the
front windshield's rubber gasket material which resembled a 5 foot
long black snake. LOL.

Re: [Maine-birds] Whales and Ales

Hello Bob,

Would have been nice if you mentioned a  real  Pelagic trip coming up on January 19th, 2013 .  The SeaBC is drawing people from around the country and Maine.............. so this Pelagic trip is a real thing not a virtual experience.

The Gulf of Maine SeaBC is not free,     there will be NO BEER.... but there will be very real birds, possibly whales, if we have a window that allows us out beyond Mount Desert  Rock.....  and it will be COLD.....(hand warmers and long johns recommended) .
I guarantee excellent birds to start off your New Year bird list.

New Hampshire Public TV will be joining us to record this adventure and I am personally excited to be back on the water for the 3rd SeaBC................ recording regional birds for our general knowledge and understanding of GOM.

I definitely recommend joining my friend Zack Klyver... but I also highly recommend calling me and making plans for the 3rd Gulf of Maine SeaBC during the weekend  of January 19th.  (See attachment) There are a few seats open.

This week's birding column in the Bangor Daily News is a twofer: http://bangordailynews.com/2012/12/28/outdoors/whale-watching-trip-perfect-for-ignoring-whales-watching-birds/

Not only is it about pelagic birding on Bar Harbor Whale Watch, but it's also an invitation to try a new event from the Penobscot Valley Chapter of Maine Audubon. Zack Klyver is presenting a program on whales at the Sea Dog in Bangor this coming Friday night at 7pm. It combines two of my favorite concepts: nature and beer. The program is free. The beer isn't. We'll get two chances to see how successful this type of social/educational event is because on February 1st, we'll try it again: "Bears and Beers" with state bear biologist Randy Cross.

[Maine-birds] Green-Winged Teals-Fore River, PIGR's-My yard, Grondin Pond ducks,ATSP pics

Made several birding from or near the car stops today while my son took his nap. 7 Pine Grosbeaks showed up to my crab when I was leaving the house around 9am. They seem to be showing up around that time and disappearing later on. There were two drake Green-Winged Teals at the Fore River amongst the typical waterfowl. When I arrived at Grondin Pond, there were a decent number of gulls, but nothing out of the ordinary. Aside from CANG, MALL, and ABDU, there was a pair of Gadwall, 1 Greater Scaup, 3 Ruddy Ducks, 3 American Coots, and I only saw one American Wigeon (the several times I was here there were at least 7).

My favorite part of the day, however, was parking next to an American Tree Sparrow at the end of Old Neck Rd in Scarborough that hardly flew when I got out of the car less than ten feet away and immediately flew right back onto the ground maybe 6 feet away. I had a very entertaining photo shoot with it and attached the link to my Flickr.

Muir confusion FW: [Maine-birds] dovekie Tree sparrow pics FW: eBird Report - Totman Cove, Phippsburg, Dec 29, 2012

I've been told that the bird I called a Dovekie is actually a thick billed muir. Moooore muir murre confusion for me as the ID was sure I'd screw up was the tree sparrow. Which I got right. Yeah for me! So, the muir is a new yard bird for me, too. Cool yard even if there's too much shoveling involved. RRR

Broke a personal feeder record this morning with 9 male Cardinals at the same time. Previous record has been 7 males. Plus all the usuals: Red-Bellied Woodpecker,Goldfinches Siskins,Creeper,Tree WT and Song Sparrows etc.etc. I lost my pair of Red-Breasted Nuthatches awhile back and have not seen one since.

This morning we had a flock of 40-50 Common Redpolls at our feeders here on Green's Hill.  Along with the usual assortment of Hairy, Downy, and Redbellied Woodpeckers, Chickadees, White and Red-breasted Nuthatches, Cardinals, Starlings, Crows, Mourning Doves and a White-throated Sparrow.  The Redpolls emptied a hanging feeder in no time at all.

[Maine-birds] Freeport/Brunswick CBC - The Western Half

Highlights from the western half of the Freeport/Brunswick CBC. Preliminary figures show a total of 70 species on December 29. No new species this year.

  • The Chebeague crew found the only Purple Finches the lone Sharp-shinned Hawk reported.
  • Cousin’s Island group posted the highest species count for the day at 49 and had a number of the rarer species on the count including the only Ring-necked Pheasant.
  • Wolfe’s Neck topped the number of birds counted at 1656 and contributed Red-necked Grebe and Pine Siskin
  • South Freeport crew had both the lone Northern Flicker and Hermit Thrush as well as the only Purple Sandpipers seen.
  • The Maquoit Team added a Northern Pintail and (95) Greater Scaup
  • The former BNAS birded by the Maquoit Team yielded 30 Horned Larks and a Pine Warbler
  • Freeport West contributed the days only Northern Shrike-at 70 MPH on I-295.  Good spotting Robbie Lambert.
  • The Brunswick crew big find of the day was 141 Snow Buntings in one flock and as always topped the Mallard count with 460.

Among the other “good” birds were 3 Barrow’s Goldeneyes, 2 Gray Catbirds, and 2 Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warblers, and just 2 Pine Siskins.

The woods were quiet with most songbirds found at or nearby feeders.  Blue Jays everywhere thanks to the decent acorn crop this year. If anyone wants a copy of the figures once I have them all proofed, please let me know off line.

[Maine-birds] Whales and Ales

This week’s birding column in the Bangor Daily News is a twofer: http://bangordailynews.com/2012/12/28/outdoors/whale-watching-trip-perfect-for-ignoring-whales-watching-birds/

Not only is it about pelagic birding on Bar Harbor Whale Watch, but it’s also an invitation to try a new event from the Penobscot Valley Chapter of Maine Audubon. Zack Klyver is presenting a program on whales at the Sea Dog in Bangor this coming Friday night at 7pm. It combines two of my favorite concepts: nature and beer. The program is free. The beer isn’t. We’ll get two chances to see how successful this type of social/educational event is because on February 1st, we’ll try it again: “Bears and Beers” with state bear biologist Randy Cross.

[Maine-birds] Bremen birds

Through the blowing, I see on the cove 27 Canada Geese, 4 Black ducks - around the feeders are Maine's total population of Blue Jays and Mourning Doves with a Red-Bellied at the suet and Cardinals, chickadees, tufted timouse, white-throated sparrows, and dark-eyed juncos trying to get a see or two. The red squirrel is wrapped around the feeder!

Re: [Maine-birds] Vultures pick at visitor's cars in the Everglades

That's odd, all right.  I lived in Florida for fourteen years and never heard of vultures eating cars.

Good thing it's in the Everglades, and not at Disney, or they'd start shooting them again.

[Maine-birds] Stockton Springs LASP

Hi Everyone,
I covered most of the coastal part of Stockton Springs for the North Penobscot Bay CBC today.
Of note was a Lark Sparrow that I found in "down town" Stockton: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wnbirder/8323354603/ If driving north on Main Street, turn right onto Station Street. The bird was about 200 feet past 19 Station St, on the left.
Other "good" birds include a Gray Catbird (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wnbirder/8323359737/), and a Red-bellied Woodpecker (somewhat uncommon around here).
I also had a fairly high Rudy Duck count (118).
Good birding,
William

[Maine-birds] (Maine-birds) Hermit Thrush

I had a very active Hermit Thrush in Cape Elizabeth near the gate to Ram Island farm on Jordan Road. Also small band of Pine Grosbeaks there and a larger band wandering around central Cape, near the shopping center where IGA is. These birds also show up in the trees by the library, the middle school and the sumac near the quarry on Fowler Road.

[Maine-birds] Pine warbler

A pine warbler has been making sporadic visits to my feeder here in North Berwick for about a month. It would not be profitable for anyone to try to see it.  I don't see it everyday and it comes at different times, rarely staying for more than a few minutes. It seems quite healthy, taking small seed and peanut suet dough.

[Maine-birds] pine grosbeaks and tree sparrows

About 18 pine grosbeaks in the fruit trees in front of the Augusta armory today. Unfortunately there was also one dead in the snow under the tree. I  wonder if it flew into the traffic on Western Ave. and got hit, something I have worried about whenever I see them in landscape plantings in high traffic areas.

On a happier note, I had five American tree sparrows in my friend's yard on Church Hill Road this morning.

[Maine-birds] Eagle--Cape Neddick Harbor

Yesterday, I caught the ducks swarming as they do when an eagle comes into the harbor but I was painting a bathroom and couldn't stop to really look. Today, he/she is sitting proudly at the top of my  neighbor's tall fir at the edge of the harbor.  It can easily be seen from the Cape Neddick bridge.

[Maine-birds] OT: Twilight of the Hooded Grebe

The video below was forwarded by a friend from southernmost Argentina, Santiago Imberti.  Santiago is a ornithologist, guide, conservationist and educator with a deep regard for the future of Patagonian wildlife.  The video is 30minutes long but very well produced and photographed, and very worth watching.  (It's in English.)  It catalogs the precipitous decline of the Hooded Grebe in the past decade.  I know this is becoming a frequent story, but this story is personal.

Ten or twelve years ago I was among a small party which was guided by Santiago to view the beautiful but hard to find Hooded Grebe, as well as many other species of the deep southern cone including Magellanic Plover and Austral Rail.  Santiago was the individual that rediscovered the Austral Rail, thought to be extinct, and he took us to the ranch where he first found the bird.  A couple years later Santiago visited Maine in early summer and Howie Nielsen and I managed to show him two of our local rails as pay back.  Plus a couple raptors, the piping plover, and many of Maine's neotropical migrants.  I had been so struck by the beauty of this rare grebe I did a painting of the bird which subsequently appeared on the cover of an ornithological journal published in Buenos Aires.  So it with deep sadness to hear that this grebe is on a quick slide to extinction.

The reasons are the usual.  Unintended consequences of human endeavor.  Or intervention, if you will.  Trout were introduced to the ponds on the plateaus where the grebe breeds, in the hopes they would provide income to the locals.  Unfortunately this scheme failed, but the trout change the ecology of the ponds, eliminating food for the grebes as well as the floating plants they use to build nests.  Then mink farming took off as the latest attempt to become wealthy.  When that failed the mink were released and are causing havoc among the local avifauna wherever they have spread.

Worth a look just at the beautiful but harsh environment, but also glimpses of guanacos (native camels), Chilean flamingo, steamer ducks, native foxes and lizards, and the young people trying to save the grebe.  Santiago also sent me some papers on this topic, and if you wish to read these contact me offline.

[Maine-birds] FW: eBird Report - Totman Cove, Phippsburg, Dec 28, 2012

Great birding day from the comfort of my home. Four hours of shovelling 6" of snow with a Naaaaaaaaaaice layer of ice did ruin every joint in my body, but allowed seeing great raptors today and hhighlight 2 WW crossbills coming from east to west, first of winter season here. Tomorrow, I'll be birding from a bed with a complete traction set up, I can feel it in my bones.

[Maine-birds] Todays Feeder Birds

I was quite surprised to see a Carolina Wren on the sunflower seed feeder this afternoon. I had one two summers ago that I only saw irreguarly, and I saw only once in October. Also have lots of redpolls, a few goldfinches, pair of northarn cardinals, up to 40 mourning doves, starlings, hairy woodpecker, black-cappeed chickadees, both nuthatches, and tree, song and white-thoated sparrows.

Re: [Maine-birds] Re: Looking for Pine Grosbeaks in Southern ME

There are still 6 PIGR at the House of Lights, Roundwood on Payne Rd.
in Scarborough. I have seen them there consistently since Nov. 16. I
had one yesterday in my yard and I have one C. Redpoll today.

[Maine-birds] BOWA - Waterville; BAGO - Shawmut; HOLA and LALO - Flood Farm

Highlights at the Shawmut Dam, Fairfield were 1 Barrows Goldenye with about 180 Common Goldeneyes, 2 Common Megansers, 1 Bald Eagle, over 300 Mallards. Complete list at: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12396625

At the Flood Farm, Clinton we had 2 Red-tailed hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Glaucous Gull, 1 Iceland Gull, 80 Redpolls, 115 Horned Larks in two groups (35 +80) and 1 Lapland Longspur, 7 Tree sparrows, 1 Song Sparrow, as well as the usual Herring gulls, Rock Pigeons, Starlings, and Crows.  List: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12396820

Redpolls were everywhere - a large flock of about 150 found on the River Road, Benton on the way to the Flood Farm; in the road itself and along the edge in tall weeds.  http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S12396744

[Maine-birds] Woodland: Redpolls

The storm didn't reach my neck of the woods until after 2PM!

"My" Common Redpoll flock (about 80 strong) is currently filling up on niger seed here in Woodland.  Quite frenetic...

New today, are two larger, darker redpolls that appear to be members of the "Greater" subspecies of Common Redpoll.  With the naked eye, these birds are easily distinguishable as different from the rest of the crowd.  David Sibley has some good notes on these at his blog:

I also have an aggressive little silvery redpoll that may be a Hoary but it needs further study.  This one is also easily distinguishable as lighter-toned than the rest and seems to enjoy body-checking any of the others that get in it's space.

Heavy snow not helping my photography attempts.

A female cardinal and the mixed flock of Pine and Evening Grosbeaks keep it colorful.

[Maine-birds] PIGR - new yard bird

Had to report this one as they are a new yard bird for me - they came into my crabapple beside the driveway as we were “playing” in the snow with shovel and the snow blower!!  About 15 of them - they stayed and fed for a while as we continued digging out - I finally grabbed the camera for a few shots just for a memoir - the lighting and almost horizontal blowing snow/sleet did not make for ideal picture taking conditions to put it mildly!!

A great two days as yesterday as I was saying goodbye to my grandson, a Pileated Woodpecker flew over the house - another new yard bird (sure wish he had stopped for a while but flyovers count!!).  I am anxiously waiting to see what bird will show up tomorrow - why not new ones three in a row?

Today, lots of Juncos (at least 30), a few Tree Sparrows, 2 WT Sparrows, all my Cardinals,  plus the usual gang along with the return of the 2 C Redpolls I had earlier in the month.

We have only had about 15 minutes of rain and ½ hour of sleet - otherwise all snow even tho most weather reports predicated rain as the day progressed.     Current radar shows the sleet line about on top of us.  Hope you are all safe and warm and enjoying your favorite warm beverage as the storm rages outside.

            Marie - South Portland

[Maine-birds] Feeders in the storm

Very excited during this snow storm to see at least 2 C. Redpolls
(first of the season for me) and 3 Pine Siskins visiting my tiny
office window feeders, along with the usual chickadees, titmice,
goldfinches, and (1) White-breasted Nuthatch.

Stay safe, all.

[Maine-birds] Feeder birds

One bedraggled DE Junco and one C. Redpoll braving the blowing snow at the seed feeders this a.m. Today of all days hope is surely the thing with feathers! (Dear old crazy Emily had such a way with words.) The stout-hearted chickadees, of course, are ever undeterred.

[Maine-birds] Brunswick feeder birds

In addition to the usual red breasted nuthatch, mourning doves, chickadees, titmice, goldfinches, house finches, and common redpolls that have been visiting our feeders lately, we were graced by the presence of 8 red crossbills this morning. They spent fifteen glorious minutes feasting on seeds and then flew away as quickly as they came. First ever for us. The group included males, females, and juveniles.

[Maine-birds] Christmas closes with a N. Saw-whet Owl - four tooting

At 6:00 this evening I went out and heard a Saw-whet Owl giving a rapid four note tooting sequence.  Each burst lasted <2 seconds, perhaps just a bit more than 1 second.  I heard 8 - 10 vocalizations over a 20 minute period.

I've never heard this vocalization before but the clear sharp notes and pitch were fine for Saw-whet and didn't match anything else in my experience.  This sound is not included in the Cornell North American Owl cd set.

I spoke with Davis Finch who has also heard these rapid fire sequences.

Fine conclusion to a lovely day.

I'd be interested in hearing from others who have heard something similar.

Best, Peter
