[Maine-birds] sapsuckers in winter

Sapsuckers are generally considered as a "good" bird for any Maine
CBC. Yesterday our count group discovered an immature bird in the
maples around my house in Warren. Although the woodpecker showed up
the morning following the recent strong windstorm, we can't be certain
of the influence of weather. Today the sapsucker remains around my
front yard. This afternoon it drilled a series of fresh sapwells in a
mature rock maple, heavily soaking a 6 foot long section of tree
trunk. Suet and seed are available in the same tree, but the bird
prefers to dabble around bark crevices, flaking off loose bark and
drilling holes.
