[Maine-birds] Christmas closes with a N. Saw-whet Owl - four tooting

At 6:00 this evening I went out and heard a Saw-whet Owl giving a rapid four note tooting sequence.  Each burst lasted <2 seconds, perhaps just a bit more than 1 second.  I heard 8 - 10 vocalizations over a 20 minute period.

I've never heard this vocalization before but the clear sharp notes and pitch were fine for Saw-whet and didn't match anything else in my experience.  This sound is not included in the Cornell North American Owl cd set.

I spoke with Davis Finch who has also heard these rapid fire sequences.

Fine conclusion to a lovely day.

I'd be interested in hearing from others who have heard something similar.

Best, Peter
