[Maine-birds] Woodcock almost plunges into hottub

Hi folks,

This is a somewhat humorous report.  Earlier in the week I was at my foot doctor in Augusta (Andy Smith - great guy!) and he reported that while sitting in his hottub a woodcock kept flying and chirping overhead and landing nearby giving a funny note.  I imitated the note and he said that was it.  I advised him to give the note while in the tub and the bird should come closer, even very close.  He practiced the note a few times and passed the quality assurance test.  Later, I heard him peenting in the hallway.  I will hear back from him in a couple of weeks.

When I was working at the University of Maine in Orono in the late 1970s, a wildlife grad student was very adept at mimicking woodcock and owls.  One time he was laying on the ground making the peent note when one landed nearby and walked up and stood on his chest peenting.  I have not been so lucky.

Yesterday I noticed that coltsfoot and trailing arbutus were in flower in the yard.  Fertile stems of field horsetail were up about three to four inches in some places.  Great signs of what is to come.
