[Maine-birds] Cooper's hawk

Hi all:

Just had an interesting Cooper's hawk encounter. I was walking in Portland's West End cemetary around 1PM today, 20 June.  Spotted a large Cooper's hawk in the low branches of a (?Scotch) pine at the SW corner of the cemetary, in the pine grove near the corner of Vaughan and Danforth Streets. It eyed me from a branch about 25' away, then abruptly swooped directly at my head. It then alighted on another low, close branch, then darted down at me again, forcing me to duck for a second time. Then, it swooped at the back of another pedestrian, who didn't see the bird, as he was facing the other way.

The bird, which I assume is a female, given the size, must have a nest in the grove.

I didn't stick around to find out!
