[Maine-birds] Grouse & chicks on porch, Harmony

As we were coming back to the house from Grants Brook this afternoon, there was a sudden flurry of wings in front of us, and we looked up to see an R. Grouse crashing into our front picture window. When she made a second ill-conceived escape attempt, she was joined by 4-5 chicks. (In our shock we did not get an accurate count.) She then took off from the end of the porch followed by several chicks, but one remained behind, insisting on trying the picture window route also. I managed to scoop it up and hurried off in the direction mom had gone, but she was no where in sight. We decided to put the little one in the edge of the woods at the bottom of the small field we figured mom must be in. I hope that was the right decision. Yesterday I came upon another baby ? that could certainly get around, but could not yet fly. It was still fairly downy, but plenty loud! Also left that one in the charge of Mother Nature.

The funny thing about the grouse and the picture window is that we were just congratulating ourselves on the fact that our "string theory" (Acopian system, strings hanging outside window) seemed to be working. We have not had any other collisions this spring.
