Hey everyone:
Sorry for the late post, but yesterday's birdwalk at Gilsland Farm was great! Despite getting fairly wet in the rain there was a diverse pulse of migrants moving through early - it took over an hour just to get up to the pond! With a goal of 50 species, I was thrilled to tally 62 by the end of the walk. Highlights included:
10 Green-winged Teal, my first migrant waterfowl here this fall, flew in to the small cove near the West Meadow blind (a great place to bird from in the rain). Two White-rumped Sandpipers were picked up in flight with a group of Semipalmated Sandpipers - an overdue patch-bird for me.
A dozen warbler species throughout the walk provided constant color to brighten our dampened spirits. As soon as I stepped out of my car there were migrants streaming south; many too high and backlit to be identified but plenty feeding in the apple trees around the buildings. The 'best' being a cooperative female Blackburnian Warbler showing off for us while we attempted to stay dry in the yurt.
Here is a complete checklist from the walk: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S15097952
Good birding,
