As mentioned in posts earlier this week, the south-bound migration is well and truely started.
After reports of shorebirds appearing at various Maine locations, our first migrating SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS presented themselves yesterday.
Two of them feed on the lawn throughout the peak of Arthur today and by early afternoon their number at increased to 34.

Almost unnoticed, but very nearby, was a smaller cousin, a SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER.
That's another season first.
The dense (almost drizzle) fog Thursday contributed to the death of quite a few Tern chicks and certainly the heavy rain storm has killed more. How many won't be known until conditions improve enough to permit a safe nest check.
Weather fatalities are never a welcome they certainly hurt all the more with the colony in such a frail condition.
