Was at Hills Beach this morning from 7 to Noon but had no luck with any of the rare terns reported there recently. Though there was a lot of tern activity the entire time, with an estimated 150 Commons, 20 Roseates, and 1 flyby Least. Interesting that these numbers were relatively unchanged the entire time I was there. And the tern numbers were about the same when I came back for another search at 2:30, though the numbers of gulls increased dramatically in the afternoon.
Other highlights were 60 Bonaparte's and 1 Laughing Gull. Shorebirds featured 22 SB Dowitchers, 95 Semi Sands feeding on floating seaweed like phalaropes at sea, 1 semi plover, and 2 Lesser Yellowlegs. Also had 13 Snowy Egrets (all flying south) an 3 Great Egrets (all flying north). Plus interesting to hear a mockingbird singing imitations of a Least Tern and Willet.
Also went to Pine Point from 12:30 to 2, Highlight there was 1 Whimbrel on the flats, along with 19 Willets and 1 Black-bellied Plover. As for terns - 50 Commons, 2 Roseates, and 1 Least. And 18 Bonaparte's and 2 Laughing Gulls rounded out the list on the flats. Plus a fly-by Glossy Ibis was nice.
