[Maine-birds] Short-eared owl Rt. 1 near Weskeag

Hi folks,

I was driving north on Rt. 1 in Thomaston at about 5:00 pm and watched a short-eared owl flying along then over Rt 1 about a half mile before the turn to Weskeag Marsh.  Cool bird!

I had pulled off the road to look at the Maine atlas and looked up and saw the owl fly over the berm above the limestone quarry.  The raised berm runs close to and parallel to the road.

The bird flew parallel to the road, crossed through the wires and continued to fly north over the center of the road at about 30 feet above the road surface.  After about 150 feet it veered sharply right slowing down then quickly speeding up then almost hovering.

The Mew gull was present at the lobster pound.

I visited Clarry Hill in Union (?) before lunch to look for snowy owls and to see if any hawks were moving.  There were two small flocks of snow buntings in the blueberry fields and an adult bald eagle sitting along the edge of the fields.  The wind was about 10-15 mph at the summit.

Good birding,

Norm Famous
