[Maine-birds] KING RAIL - Wells, 6/9

A KING RAIL has been present in Wells for nearly a month now. The bird was first photographed by Bri Benvenuti on 10 May 2016 and then relocated on 7 June 2016. Documentation was only recently circulated revealing the bird as a King Rail and it continues to be seen and heard as of today.

The location is towards the east end of Eldridge Road in Wells, before reaching Webhannet Drive. There is a small pool between the second and third telephone poles (from the east) that has a large stand of phragmites behind it. The bird has been frequenting that stand and is very vocal. The longest we heard it go without calling was only around 20 minutes so be patient if it is not calling when you arrive. We've created a stakeout hotspot on eBird that has a link to the exact location: http://ebird.org/ebird/hotspot/L4686574

This area is protected by the National Wildlife Refuge System so no one should enter the marsh. There is a wide shoulder on the road with plenty of space for people to stand. Although cars may fit on this shoulder, I strongly encourage people to park along Webhannet Drive where there are plenty of legitimate parking spaces.

Good birding,
