RE: [Maine-birds] Cat Collars

Hi I have had cats for decades and for the last 20 mine have been indoor cats. I am fortunate to have an attached greenhouse/sunroom that is the cats domain and directly accessible from a bedroom window. They get exercise and fresh air and can watch birds all spring, summer and fall. All were adopted and were outdoor cats, including one 6 mos. old feral. My old coon cat tries halfheartedly to get out but they are much happier and I think feel safer in circumscribed surroundings. I even have one that has zero interest in even going into the cat lair.Once they learned there was no way to wheedle me into letting them outside they adapted nicely! I have the best of both cat and bird worlds although the chipmunk population gets a bit out of control!

I am aware that situations differ but thought I would share mine.   Thanks and enjoy the nature-Sharon in West Kennebunk

Hello all,

This topic came up on Maine-birds a few years ago. I think the only thing that has changed is that we have now better quantified the impact of cats on birds and other small animals. There is good science demonstrating they kill billions (with a "b") of birds every year in the U.S. alone.

It is my opinion we need to change our mindset when it comes to cats. We long have let them roam free. Similarly, not all that long ago, dogs roamed free widely. In the case of dogs, most communities now have leash laws. It is time to apply leash laws to cats; or we keep them indoors.

I understand there are extreme passions on both sides of this issue—to restrain one's cats or not to restrain them—but the issue can be simplified to a the fact that deciding to let one's cat be an unfettered outdoor cat is to decide that we are willing to sacrifice wildlife. As a society, it is time we make a choice. As for me, I hope the choice is in favor of protecting the natural world.

Respectfully,

Rich

keeping cats inside is also the best for the health and safety of the cat.

Just keep cats indoors. I have a lot of trouble believing the effectiveness of this devise.

Since our cat offed a male bluebird earlier this season we've discovered http://www.birdsbesafe.com/. They sell adorable and effective cat collars that have so far saved birds and let the stupid cats stay outside.  These fabric cat collars have stayed on for a month now. A marriage saver for Mr Bird and Mrs Cat.
