Last night I woke to the sound of what I thought was a lost dog whining at my door. When I investigated, I realized it was something else, very much like a dog whine, only uniform and coming at regular intervals, such as a bird rather than a mammal would do. It would start and end with that high- pitched, breathy sound a dog makes and in the middle a two-note whine. It seemed to be coming from high in a big maple but could have been from the woods. It went on for hours.--
Internet searches have been to no avail. Any ideas?
