Weather:
Today had the kind of weather ODB would have enjoyed, just raw. I thought there might be a delay in the start but the visibility, on the horizontal plain was almost unlimited. The sky was cloudy but no rain or fog in the area for the time being. Winds were light, from the east southeast. After about 75 minutes fog began to creep in and a light mist developed. By 11am EST visibility had deteriorated and I left the mountain for a couple of hours. I tried again at 2pm thinking I'd give it an hour for conditions to change. After 30 minutes of mist and fog with stronger easterly winds I came to my senses and called it a day.
Raptor Observations:
Jim spotted our only migrant in the early hours, about 5 miles to the southeast. During the brief time in the pm as I contemplated what to do, staring blankly into the gray, Hawkwatch Junco began one of its alarm calls. I snapped back to reality, searched around and a few seconds later saw a small Sharp-shinned Hawk disappear over the trees to the southwest.
Non-raptor Observations:
Two Belted Kingfishers and three Mallards were the only none raptors seen moving north today.
Predictions:
We'll need to be on our toes tomorrow, ready for speedy identifications if possible as winds are predicted to be rather strong and gusty but from the southwest this time. That could really be a leg up for any migrants looking to utilize a tailwind. Hopefully there won't be much in the way of early morning fog to contend with. Skies should be pretty clear with highs getting into the upper 50's and maybe 60's.
