[Maine-birds] 30+ Bald Eagles - Richmond/Litchfield

Hi Everyone,

On the way up north to conduct an eagle survey yesterday I observed 30, yes THIRTY (!)  bald eagles at the Albion A. Raynes marsh just west of exit 43 on I-295 on the Richmond/Litchfield line.  I could only afford a few minutes of pull-over time to stay on schedule (thankfully it was at sunrise Easter Sunday and there was no one else on the road!) but I quickly counted 5 adults, 2 juv's,, plus 23 others in various sub-adult plumage.  I counted 14 out on the ice, with the others ringing the marsh in what seemed like every snag available.  I can only imagine how many others there were that I couldn't see.  It was hard to tear myself away from that eagle pit-stop, I could have spent all day soaking in all that perched color variation - what a sight.  There were also 6 more BAEA dotted along the north end of the marsh further up the highway.

On the way back through 12 hours later, the ice had thawed considerably and 'only' 5 baldies remained.  I like to think they took advantage of the excellent migration conditions yesterday and continued on their journeys fat and happy in part because of the refuge that one marsh provided for the night.  It really goes to show just how important each and every protected habitat area is!!!

Happy Spring!
