Weather:
Temperatures were quite balmy at the hawkwatch today, soaring up to 60
degrees. The occasional whisp of a cloud attempted to cross the sky, most
disintegrating a few minutes after coming into view. The wind was
relatively light, only 5-10mph, but its northerly bent made it a bit of a
hindrance to migrants.
Raptor Observations:
A relatively light migration day for this time of the year. In the morning
birds would rise on a scrap of a thermal, then quickly drop out and sink
below horizon. Later in the day there were some high birds, but not as many
as could be expected. We're still awaiting the big push of Broad-winged
Hawks.
Non-raptor Observations:
There seemed to be an increase in Pine Warblers around the summit, each
with a different song rendition to declare at the top of one's lungs. Few
passerines and waterbirds were on the move, but small bursts of swallows
occasionally sailed through.
Non-raptor Migrants:
Double-crested Cormorant- 2
Tree Swallow- 42
Barn Swallow- 3
warbler sp.- 1
Predictions:
Back down to the 40s with a brisk, 10-15mph southeast wind. Clouds will be
on the increase throughout the day. More birds should be moving, especially
if the wind stays more south than east.
