The day is almost over and I aimed in vain to bookend the past 24 hours with a Northern Saw-whet Owl. Late last night, right before retiring, I stepped outside my rural Bar Harbor home for a few minutes to listen to the night chorus of amphibians. Over the cacophony of Spring Peepers, I faintly heard the repetitive tooting of a Northern Saw-whet Owl. Very nice!
Later, about 3:30 this morning, I was awoken by a monotone “Who cooks for you, who cooks for you,” repeated a number of times. Barred Owl, owl number 2.
After putting my daughter on the bus, I headed to Acadia National Park to jog around Witch Hole Pond. Not far into my run, I flushed a Great Horned Owl from a tree. I don’t know which of us was more startled. It flew directly across the path, across a beaver meadow, and into the forest. Owl number 3 for the day!
