[Maine-birds] Tree Swallows - Benton/Farm/Sebasticook River

Always fun to see spring birds arrive. It is like old friends visiting.

Tree Swallows are back this morning. The return dates for last three
year are:

2011, April 12
2012, April 9
2013, April 11

15 nests were cleaned two weeks ago. All nests had nesting material
from last year.

Also back is a Bluebird pair that always starts out in a nest and is
driven out by the Tree Swallows. The Bluebirds arrive a week or two
before the Tree Swallows.

There is a nesting Kestrel pair living in the barn roof overhang. They
have been here for at least the last 5 years. They have been here for
about 3 weeks and keep dive bombing about 10 Starlings that live in the
grain feed tube all winter. The dive bombing appears to be sport rather
than a kill attempt.

Osprey pair was sighted yesterday on the power line nest at the
Benton/Winslow line on Rt 100 for the first time.

Male and Female Red-Winged Black Birds are back in strength.

Cedar Wax Wings have been back for a few weeks.

Looking forward to the return of the Barn Swallows. Last year the
numbers fell from over 12 to 16 pairs to about 5 pairs.

2011, April 25 arrived in mass
2012, April 29 one lone scout Barn Swallow arrived followed by the rest on
2012, May 14

Last year showed a big fall off of Barn Swallows. Hopefully this year
we have a more successful return of Barn Swallows.

The Phoebes, nesting Robins and Baltimore Orioles have not shown up yet.

There are lots of other birds, but these are the more significant
observations.
