Mount Desert Island Birds: Spruce Grouse Falcipennis canadensis

Beech Mountain Spruce Grouse June 4 2013, Hancock, US-ME

Protocol: Stationary
Comments:     Graham Good Nick Lewis, Rick and Judith Bonney, and I photographed a 1st year female Spruce Grouse on Lower Beech Mountain in Acadia National Park. The location is local knowledge. Many interesting things about this bird. First it is typically Spruce Grouse and clearly almost afraid that people are going to leave. Secondly, I am making the assumption that this bird was flying about when it ran into the mountain. I am unaware of any reproductive activity around Lower Beech Mountain. Perhaps there are others with more knowledge about this. It was first seen many days ago when my wife and daughter hiked up and stepped of the trail into an opening. I found this quote quite interesting from the Cornell site "A bird of coniferous forests, the Spruce Grouse inhabits much of Canada and portions of the northern United States. Inconspicuous and relatively quiet, it feeds largely on the needles of spruces and other conifers." This bird is the exact opposite by boldly walking under my legs and then jumping on my hand.  My new favorite Bird!! Plus…. I had a chance to meet Rick and Judith.
4 species

Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis canadensis)  1     1st year female Spruce grouse with typical close-up shots. The most amazing thing about this bird is that we just happen to cross paths with Rick and Judith Bonney who were also amazed at the gregarious behavior of this young female.  Photos will be  found at FACEBOOK@ Acadia Birding Festival

Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura)  1
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata)  1
Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)  2
