I saw a swallow tailed kite yesterday flying overhead after a friend pointed it out. I watched it fly for 150' at 100' altitude from just past overhead as it tracked away. It was unmistakeable! My friend noticed the white/black coloration of the wings as it flew overhead. I recognized the distinctive lazy, light wing beat of a kite. It had the deeply forked tail, not to be confused with anything in molt, and the long tapered wings and the light-on-the-wings flight style typical of the spp. It traveled north to south over our yard and was lost behind trees. I lived in FL for 3 years and had ample opportunity to see these birds in the wild. Even though it felt like FL here yesterday I was not expecting to see a FL specialty. I will certainly remain on the lookout for it, but consider it total dumb luck. Should've bought that Powerball ticket last night:-)
