Nice morning at Popham. A Royal Tern was loafing on the open beach w/ a common Tern at a little after 9:00. When the Com Tern took off, so did the Royal; last seen flying steadily west toward Cape Small, offshore of Seawall Beach.
In addition to the Royal Tern, there were a minimum of 38 Least Terns feeding and courting actively near the Morse River mouth. In addition to the 3 or 4 nesting pairs here, birds from another colony someplace must visit. Probably because the fishing here (for Inshore Sandlance) is so good.
First Merlin of the season also strafed a group of shorebirds near the surf zone. Piping Plovers are all over, including at least 6 just fledged chicks. Total of 16 birds today.
Also first juv Bonaparte's Gulls of the season, and 2 Laughing Gulls (adults).
Finally, via beach-going friends down there, rumors of Hudwit and 2 skimmers yesterday. Don't know how credible these reports are.
