[Maine-birds] Belfast Bay census of 12/11/14

Gary and I censused the bay on Thursday of this week.   The number of individual birds was the lowest, 302, in the 2 1/2 years of the study, but the number of species, 17, was about normal for this time of year.  As with the last census numbers of Herring Gulls and Mallards were low.  While driving between observation points, we saw about 50 Herring Gulls in field and 21 Mallards on a lawn.   Perhaps with the warm weather of the preceding days, both species were trying to take advantage of additional feeding opportunities.  The birds seemed to be in the area, just not on the bay.

Also, we found a lingering Great Blue Heron.
