In the past 10 days I've received reports of no less than 16 "new" Snowy Owls observed in the central Aroostook area. At least two are snowy white adult males.
-- Our stalwart "PT Barn" Snowy continues to be reported on Route 1 north of Presque Isle but, like last winter, has been joined by several other distinguishable individuals.
To the north of PT barn, about 1/2 a mile, a dark juvenile Snowy (clearly different than the "PT Barn" owl), has been photographed several times in the past few days. Just to the south, along the Brewer Road, a snow-white male Snowy has been seen regularly since the first week of January. Earlier this week, this bird, and two others were seen simultaneously!
Other interesting reports included a Snowy Owl photographed this week on the top of the MMG Insurance building near the mall in Presque Isle, one seen just south of Easton Center along Route 1A and another in Fort Fairfield (also on Route 1A) near the Presque Isle Road (Route 167) intersection.
A little further north, Snowy Owls are being seen regularly on barns on Route 161 in Cross Lake Twp, on the Flat Mountain Road in St. Agatha and along the Madore Road in Cyr Plantation near Van Buren.
There are rumors of a number of other Snowy Owls that I've yet to confirm!
I've added a few of my snapshots of some of these to my Flickr photostream:
It's a nice chance to get out and enjoy these fabulous birds. I would love to hear from anyone seeing these, and others, in the coming weeks.
