The place to go for white-winged gulls again this year seems to be Owl’s Head harbor. This is an on-going event, and perhaps it is building to a repeat performance of last year’s numbers.
On Wednesday Dave Gulick and I counted four Iceland Gulls and a single Glaucous Gull. Two of the Icelands were second winter birds, one was a first year bird, and one was an adult, with a beautiful pearly grey mantle, yellow bill with orange spot, and bright pinkish-yellow legs.
On Friday there were two Glaucous Gulls…both looked second-yearish, but I humbly aver to any more informed opinions. There were three Icelands: probably three of the younger birds, as we did not see the adult.
Last year there was one day where we had 11 white-winged birds. The impoundment at the Lobster Co. seems to be the attraction.
The cherry on top yesterday was a Sharp-shinned Hawk near the entrance to Primo’s restaurant. (That’s also in Owl’s Head.)
