[Maine-birds] Re: Red winged black birds and owl in south unity

We had our FOY rwbb in our backyard in Hallowell today. Also first day for active chipmunk.  Woodcock dancing grounds still have > 1 foot of snow.

[Maine-birds] Ring-necks in bigger numbers - Orland, Hancock Cty

Hey all -- 45 Ring-necks today (morning and afternoon) on the now open waters of the Naramissic River, Rte 1 in Orland. Best viewing is from the dead-end short road that runs north of Rte 1 immediately after crossing over to the west (Bucksport) side of the river. That road has no traffic and ends in a muddy but passable cul de sac.

Also present: 4 Hoodies, 3 Common Goldeneye, 7 Mallards and a few Am. Black Ducks.

Best,

[Maine-birds] Monhegan - Woodcocks, Killdeer, Canada Geese....

Red-Winged Blackbirds arrived last week, been hearing Woodcocks at night, 2 Killdeer beside the meadow past few days and 2 Canada Geese in the meadow, possibly a third unseen since I saw 3 fly in this morning but one was reluctant to land. I don't usually have Song Sparrows though some are here all winter, but I have one now at my feeders, and the Mockingbird that has been here all winter is back after a few days away.

[Maine-birds] Spring migration and ice flows on the Pleasant River, Addison

Today at the Addison boat launch we found the river cluttered with strangely shaped ice masses - lots of water moving downriver.  We found a large number of ducks including 12+ Mallards, 155+ Black Ducks, 6+ Green-winged Teal, 8+ Ring-necked Ducks and 8+ Hooded Mergansers and a scattering of Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead and Red-breasted Mergansers.

On the shores of the river there was a large mixed flock of Common Grackles and Red-winged Blackbirds and American Robins.  four immature Bald Eagles were perched on snags in the area and two vociferous Killdeer were circling over the boat landing.

We checked the East Branch of the Machias River above the Route 1 bridge for Barrow's Goldeneye and for the second time in as many weeks we didn't see them.  Common Mergansers are plentiful on the river, though.

Back in Harrington, our feeders hosted 4 Fox Sparrows and 2 Song Sparrows.

[Maine-birds] Georges River - Warren village fields

A variety of ducks are now arriving in the ice-free river corridor, with daily shifts in species composition. In addition to copious mallards and black ducks, a dozen Common mergs; several hooded mergs; a drake Barrows with several common goldeneyes; 13 wood ducks (12m; 1f). Turkey vulture numbers are building rapidly in the village - 11 emerged from a night roost stand of trees around 9 am. Mammals: two small groups of deer appeared in two different fields today. It was interesting to watch them methodically paw through 2-3 inches of remaining snow crust to nibble at brown grass tips.

[Maine-birds] Northern Maine Birds: First Arrivals

All the early migrants have been a bit tardy so far this year, but today I recieved  word that 1 Common Grackle had arrived in Perham and 1 Red-winged Blackbird was seen in Mars Hill.   Also this AM, I saw a lone Canada Goose standing on the still completely frozen Aroostook River in Presque Isle.  https://www.flickr.com/photos/71911844@N04/16364292803/in/photostream/

On Sunday, Hooded Mergansers, Common Mergansers and Common Goldeneyes had all reappeared in a bit of open water on the Aroostook River in Presque Isle.  A Red-tailed Hawk was reported in Easton on Sunday too.

On my PM commute, 19 newly-arrived Ring-billed Gulls were foraging for tidbits on the ice below the Caribou Dam on the Aroostook River in Caribou.

According to photos and reports I've recieved, at least a couple Snowy Owls are still lingering in Cross Lake and St. Agatha.

A sighting of a recently-roused Chipmunk on the snow in Caribou yesterday prompted me to put out my new bear-proof feeder.  So far so good.

Cheers

Re: [Maine-birds] Seeking recordings and/or photos of Shapleigh/Waterboro Red Crossbills

Tim, et al,

I have sent many recordings to Matt since I first detected the birds here late last fall. Unfortunately, most of my recordings were inconclusive, but several suggested Type 10. Several recordings of several individuals in different groups that I made on 3/17 were finally conclusively (or, I should say, conclusively as per current knowledge) identified as Type 10, one of the most expected Types in the region.

But as Tim said, more recordings from the birds of the Waterboro Barrens Preserve area and elsewhere are extremely helpful. Slowly, the cryptic puzzle of Red Crossbill "Types" or perhaps even species, is coming together.

[Maine-birds] Seeking recordings and/or photos of Shapleigh/Waterboro Red Crossbills

While visiting Maine from Massachusetts last week I managed to see, photograph, and record Red Crossbills in Pitch Pines at Round Pond Road in Waterboro. Thanks to the Maine native at Biddeford who alerted us to their presence.

When I got home I had trouble identifying which call type I'd recorded. So I sent my recording off to Matt Young at Cornell who's researching the distribution of the different call types. He couldn't identify all of them either. More recordings could help us to track down which types are there. Unfortunately I won't be able to get back there for some time. If you're in the area and can swing by to record and if possible photograph them, or if you've already done so, getting those recordings and photographs to Matt Young could help our knowledge of this complicated species.

The spot where I was able to record the unidentified birds was at the triangle on Round Pond Road where it intersects Buff Brook Rd before veering south. We also heard and saw (but were unable to record) more Red Crossbills about a mile away on the snowmobile trail that runs north of the intersection of Newfield and Gray Rds in Shapleigh. Pitch Pines extend for miles in that general area so there could easily be more in other spots.

Here's a great article by Matt Young explaining the different call types with some information about how to record them: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/news/recrtype/ . Send recordings/photos to Matt at may6@cornell.edu . His email address is in the article as well.

I just used my smartphone with a recording app to record the birds. Be careful if you're using a device or app optimized for human voice that it isn't filtering out higher frequencies that birds use. Also, at both locations we ran into Red Crossbills within just a few minutes of arriving so it shouldn't be necessary, and isn't advised, to play recordings to attract them. If they're there you'll find them with a little patience.

[Maine-birds] Webber Pond, Bremen

the snow/rain stirred up some of the birds--the mallards were in and out--and there were some treats--a hawk swept though chased by crows --it was going too fast for me to identify it--a cardinal pair stopped by the feeder--I've been hearing them but hadn't seen them for a few months--a red breasted nuthatch has been in and out, the goldfinches are turning gold, and an immature eagle flew in across the pond (low and slow).  The usual mix of other birds was around too--redwinged blackbird numbers are way up though the pond is still frozen.

[Maine-birds] Sandhill Cranes over Richmond

Three Sandhill Cranes flew over I-295 at the Beedle Rd. in northwest Richmond this morning (fide D. Ladd). I checked their usual haunts from Messalonskee north on Wednesday and only found people skiing on the marshes, lakes, fields. Still very icy and snowy in central Maine. Things have changed a lot in the past few days, however, and this is a typical, if a week to ten days late, arrival time for cranes.

[Maine-birds] Surfbird NO, PUSA Yes, SNOW Yes

A friend and I went to Biddeford Pool today as the tide came in, from 4:30 to about 6:30. We checked several rocky areas but saw only a small flock (6) of Purple Sandpipers (lifer!) off the Eastern Point Sanctuary (far side). (I tried to make all them into the Surfbird to no avail.) We watched them feeding for about 45 minutes, hoping the Surfbird would show, but he didn't. The flock then flew south along the rocks and disappeared. Did get several Surf Scoters, a fly-by White-winged Scoter, a couple of Long-tailed Ducks, and the usual Common Eiders.

We were pretty frozen by this point, so we went in search of a Snowy Owl for my friend; we drove around the neighborhood (nothing) and then to Hattie's (nothing). I happened to point my scope back up Mile Run Road, and there he was--on a chimney near the turn onto Mile Run. We got great looks at him in the golden sunlight.

So no Surfbird, but a fun day nonetheless.

[Maine-birds] Surfbird movements, Sunday 29 March

Surbirders:

The Biddeford Surfbird and its buddies--11 Ruddy Turnstones, a Dunlin, and a few Purple Sandpipers--roosted and foraged this morning on the north end of Town Thatch Bed, the low island in the middle of the Biddeford Pool. At 11:38 the birds departed, circling the north end of the Pool and exiting northeast through the channel by Vines Landing. This was exactly 3 hours after high (Biddeford, Saco River station; photo here https://flic.kr/p/rxwMPB). I searched the jetties, Hills Beach, and around the point without luck following this. To summarize: the Surfbird has been at the point during low, mid, and high tides; it has been in the Pool at high to mid-tides; it has been with the turnstone flock and not with them, instead moving with Purple Sandpipers. The best one can say is that it's in the area and good luck!

An adult Northern Gannet and a Razorbill flew by East Point during our brief visit there. A male Gadwall was in the Pool.

[Maine-birds] Fwd: Snowy Owl - South Thomaston

From my sister who lives  on the Thomaston peninsula to Pt. Clyde. (Think Monhegan boat.)

Sunday p.m. 3/29.

"I just saw a snowy owl on Grierson Rd in South Thomaston!  It was in a field just before the Grierson Rd sign coming from south Thomaston. It caught our eye as it was flying in and then perched on the top of a bare tree."

Directions:
Coming out of the town of so thomaston go south on rt 73. Turn right on grierson rd. Head west on Grierson toward Dennison rd and the field is on the right soon before the town line that says st George. There are some trees along the road with an open space beyond. There is a big field across the street.

                 Zane Baker

Visitors:
A great total of 72 visitors to the hawk watch today, including 32 members
and friends of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club. The group had a great look
at three Bald Eagles. I'd like to thank everybody who helped count and
visited the Bradbury Hawk watch today. Special thanks to Zane Baker who
scanned the skies for many hours of the count period.

Weather:
A beautiful day at Bradbury Mountain. With great flight conditions today, a
late spring and the snow pack may be keeping birds from migrating north.
Sunny, light winds, and temperatures above freezing made for good hawk
watching conditions. Light winds changed from NW to S by the end of the
count.

Raptor Observations:
Overall not many migrants today, 12 migrants passed by the summit. Plenty
of local Bald Eagles cruising around the air space. Other local hawks were
spotted throughout the day. A couple close views of Red-tailed Hawks and a
beautiful adult Cooper's at the count's conclusion.

Non-raptor Observations:
Three Bohemian Waxwings stopped by to forage in the late morning. A
Pileated Woodpecker also provided visitors with a good look this afternoon.

Predictions:
Tomorrow rain showers are possible in the afternoon, but in the morning
birds may be flying on south winds. With overcast skies and chances of rain
throughout the day, migration will most likely be slow.
