While scoping ducks at the Schooner Head overlook at Acadia NP during the Mt. Desert I. CBC this morning, I looked out at Egg Rock and saw an adult Bald Eagle diving and flying erratically off the ledges at the south end of the island. I first thought it was after Common Eiders but then noticed that it was being harassed and chased by a large light gray bird whose flight was very hawk-like. Definitely not a gull as I seen them after eagles at that same location many times during the summer. Distance was 1.88 miles but with my scope at 20X it would be the equivalent of 0.2 miles. The eagle was easily identified (an adult) but the distance made it impossible to see any detail other than over all color, shape and flight pattern on the other bird. For what this is worth, I thought it might be a gray-phased Gyrfalcon
The "battle" lasted about 3 minutes, I was able to keep the birds fully in view and there was no air wave distortion. The eagle flew off to the east and the other bird vanished along the rocky shore line. Egg Rock is in the adjacent Schoodic Pt. CBC scheduled for 1 Jan.
